National Current Affairs

  • LokSabha passed Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013, which provides stringent action against rape and sexual assault on women.  A 20 year jail term will be imposed for the rape and if repeated it will be life term. However, the house opposed death sentence to acid attacks and child trafficking.
    • Many parties opposed to reduce the minimum age for consensual sex to 16 years from 18.
    • However, it is noteworthy here that Justice Verma committee appointed to recommend amendments to the law suggested to consider marital rape as crime. But the bill is silent on the issue.
  • Union cabinet cleared revised Food Security Bill, which entitles subsidised food grains to 67% of population under Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS). Under this, the beneficiary is entitled to 5 kg of rice or wheat or cereals at 2, 3, or 1 per kg.
    • The revised bill favours ‘two child norm’, and a pregnant woman is entitled to benefits only for the first two children.

International & Bilateral Affairs

  • Egypt’s first elected President Mohamed Morsy, who’s on his maiden visit to India, met with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and signed agreement for defence cooperation.
  • China’s new president Xi Jingping echoed his predecessor’s ‘five point formula’ to strengthen ties with India. It include cooperation in multilateral platforms, increase in people to people contacts, boost in economic relations and proper handling of disputes.

Economy

  • A nine member committee was set up under chairmanship of coal secretary S.K.Srivtsava to study PPP (Public Private Partnership) model to increase coal output.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has cut its Bench Mark Policy Rate by 25 basis points in its monetary policy review. Read the Detailed post here

  • The Test Of My Life, book on Yuvraj’s battle with cancer, was released. It’s been co-authored by NishantArora and ShardaUgra.
