International Current Affairs
- Today (18th July) is 'Nelson Mandela International Day'.
- He was born on this day in the year 1918.
- In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
- Important Points to Note :
- Mandela was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1990 for his role in the anti-apartheid movement.
- Apart from Pakistan national Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, he is the only non-Indian to have received the award.
- He was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1993.
- The International Criminal Court has brought into effect a New Law under which politicians and military leaders can be held individually responsible for invasions and other major attacks.
- The Egyptian parliament today passed an amendment offering citizenship to foreigners who deposit at least 7 million Egyptian pounds (over ₹2.5 crore) in the country's Treasury.
- Note : Under a 1975 law, foreigners had to live in Egypt for a decade to apply for naturalisation.

National Current Affairs
- A draft amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules has proposed that driving licence and pollution control certificates can be carried in physical or digital form, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced.
- The amendment further proposes that vehicle tracking systems and FASTags for electronic toll collection will be made mandatory for all commercial vehicles obtaining national permit.
- India's first government-sponsored 'Transgender Poets' Meet' was organised today at the Sahitya Akademi in West Bengal's Kolkata.
- The meet was chaired by India's first transgender college principal Manabi Bandyopadhyay.
- Puducherry Tourism has announced the first Pondicherry International Film Festival (PIFF), which will showcase over 100 films from more than 25 countries.
- The inaugural edition of PIFF will be held from 26th to 30th September 2018.
- France is the partner country for the festival and there will be a special focus on French cinema, art and culture.
- The Bihar government has raised the compensation awarded to Acid Attack Victims from ₹3 lakh to ₹7 lakh, while victims aged under 14 years will receive 50% more compensation.
- Acid attack victims who have suffered a disability or lost 80% of their eyesight will receive a monthly compensation of ₹10,000 instead of receiving the entire amount in one instalment.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has secured a Trademark for its iconic building Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers at Dalal Street in Mumbai.
- This development marks an important milestone in the journey of BSE Limited as the tower has been an irreplaceable part of the soul of the city.
- The exchange is honoured to be recognised as a symbol of evolution of stock markets in India and its past through the trademark.
- The finance ministry today approved infusion of Rs 11,336 crore in five state-owned lenders namely Punjab National Bank (PNB), Allahabad Bank, Corporation Bank, Andhra Bank and Indian Oversease Bank (IOB).
- As per the approval, the Nirav Modi Scam hit Punjab National Bank (PNB) is going to get the highest amount of Rs 2,816 crore out, followed by Allahabad Bank, which is going to get Rs 1,790 crore.
- Andhra Bank is going to get Rs 2,019 crore, and Indian Overseas Bank will get Rs 2,157 crore followed by Corporation Bank – Rs 2,555 crore.
- This is the first ever capital infusion in the current fiscal and the remaining amount of Rs 53,664 crore would be disbursed during the course of the year.

- The government has decided to set up a committee to suggest measures to strengthen National Cadet Corps (NCC) & National Service Scheme (NSS).

MOUs & Agreements
- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and European Union (EU) leaders signed a free trade agreement, eliminating tariffs on a majority of their products to enhance business between the two sides.
- American multinational retail corporation Walmart has signed a five-year partnership with Microsoft to use the company's cloud services in retail.
- The agreement will see Walmart use Azure and Microsoft 365 across the company, alongside new projects focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data platforms.
- All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) and IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)-Delhi have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance research in the field of Ayurveda.
- The MoU was signed on sidelines of two-day conference on ‘Raising towards Excellence’ held at New Delhi.
- The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has entered into partnership with search engine giant Google to monitor impacts of human activity on global ecosystems by using sophisticated online tools.
- The partnership was launched during High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.
Science & Technology
- India ranks 109th in overall 4G mobile internet speeds with an average download speed of 9.12 Mbps which is less than Pakistan (14.03 Mbps), according to data speed tester Ookla.
- Out of the list comprising 124 countries, Qatar ranked first in the list with 63.22 Mbps average download speed, followed by Norway with 62.14 Mbps download speed.
- China has built an unmanned automatic weather observation station in Tibet near its border with India.
- The station will provide meteorological support for national defence and further promote border development.
- UK Space Agency has selected site at Sutherland on A’Mhoine peninsula on north coast of Scotland for its first spaceport to launch rockets vertically and put satellites in orbit.
- For development of this spaceport, UK Government is going to provide $3.3 million funding and will be built with help of consortium of companies.
New Appointments
- India has been elected new President of Asian Tug of War Federation.
- India’s Gautam Kaul won the prestigious post in the Federations’ Executive Committee elections held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian Skipper Virat Kohli has become the fastest cricketer to score 3,000 runs as captain in ODIs, reaching the milestone against England in his 49th innings as skipper yesterday.
- The 29-year-old overtook ex-South African captain AB de Villiers, who had taken 60 innings.
- Important Note : Kohli was also the fastest to reach 1,000 (17 innings) and 2,000 ODI runs (36) as captain.
- The USA won the first Athletics World Cup at the London Stadium.
- Poland and Great Britain finished Second and Third respectively.
