International Current Affairs
  • 1st October is being observed as World Vegetarian Day.
    • It is a day of celebration established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism."
  • 1st October is also observed as International Day of Older Persons.
    • Theme of International Day of Older Persons 2019 : “The Journey to Age Equality”.
  • 30th September was observed as the International Translation Day.
    • The observance of this day seeks to recognize contribution of unsung heroes behind international diplomacy who work as language professionals to facilitate dialogue and contribute to development and strengthens world peace and security. 
    • Theme of International Translation Day 2019 : "Indigenous languages"
  • North Korea and the United States will resume talks aimed towards the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula on October 5. 
    • Note : US-North Korea nuclear talks have been stalled since the 2nd summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam ended without a deal.
National Current Affairs
  • 1st October was observed as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.
    • The objective of this day is to share the need and importance of the blood in the life of an individual.
    • This day was first observed in the year 1975 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology.
  • The 94th Raising Day of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) is being celebrated on 1 October 2019. 
  • India's largest 'charkha' (spinning wheel) made of plastic waste was inaugurated in Noida on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. 
    • The 1,650-kilogram spinning wheel was inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani.
    • It was made out of 1,250-kilogram plastic waste.
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the country recorded the highest rainfall this monsoon since 1994, and classified it as 'above normal' as the season officially ended on Monday. 
  • To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Doordarshan, country’s public service broadcaster has join hands to telecast TV bilingual programme ‘Bapu Zinda Hain (Mahatma Lives)’ on 1-2 October 2019.
    • The objective of programme is to celebrate his ideas and teachings and how it has shaped the lives of people in India as well as around the world.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) superseded the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank and provided a toll-free number to be used by customers for grievances and redressal.
    • Depositors can dial 1800223993 or visit the PMC website to file grievances, the bank said. 
    • RBI also appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the bank's administrator with all powers of the board.
  • The board of IDBI Bank has given in-principle approval to divest its 19.18% stake in the Asset Reconstruction Company (India) (ARCIL)
    • The sale would comprise 6.23 crore equity shares of the private-sector lender. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • State-owned construction firm NBCC (India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of Sports under Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) to provide Project Management Consultancy for development of National Sports University at Imphal, Manipur. 
    • The approximate cost of project would be Rs.400 crore.
Awards & Honors
  • Bollywood Actor Sanjay Kapoor has received an award for being the Most Inspiring Indian Bollywood Actor at the House of Commons of the United Kingdom
    • He was earlier awarded in Norway for his performance in 'Lust Stories'.
  • International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named a minor planet, orbiting Sun from between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj
    • The Padma Vibhushan recipient has become the 1st Indian musician to have a celestial body named after them. 
    • The minor planet was discovered on November 11, 2006, by the NASA-funded project Catalina Sky Survey.
  • Physicist and Cosmologist Thanu Padmanabhan was conferred the prestigious M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology. 
Deaths
  • Veteran actor Viju Khote (77), known for his roles as 'Kalia' in 'Sholay' and 'Robert' in 'Andaz Apna Apna', passed away.
    • The actor, who featured in over 300 Hindi and Marathi films, had been working in films since 1964. 
    • He had also starred in the television show 'Zabaan Sambhalke'.
Science & Technology
  • BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile, with major indigenous systems, was successfully test fired from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur in Odisha. 
    • The missile was test-fired for its full strike range of 290-km during the launch jointly conducted by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and BrahMos Aerospace.
    • The first extended version of BrahMos missile was successfully tested on 11 March, 2017, which had a strike range of 450 kilometres.
New Appointments
  • Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took charge as the 26th Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF)
    • He has replaced Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, who retired after 41 years of service.
  • A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has recommended former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon as the next chairman of Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT)
    • The other members of bench included Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer.
Books & Authors
  • Lata Mangeshkar's sister, singer Meena Mangeshkar Khadikar released her Hindi book titled 'Didi aur Main', on Mangeshkar family. 
    • The book was unveiled a day after Lata turned 90 years old.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India won the SAFF Under-18 football Championship by defeating Bangladesh in final held in Kathmandu, Nepal. 
    • Important Note : This is India’s maiden SAFF U-18 trophy.
  • Portugal's Joao Vieira has become the oldest person to win a medal in World Athletics Championships history, achieving the feat aged 43. 
  • Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix, his 9th Grand Prix win this year.
