International Current Affairs
  • The International Day of Charity is being observed today (5th September). 
    • Aim of International Day of Charity : To recognise the role of charity in alleviating human ‎suffering within and among nations, as well as to recognise the efforts of charitable organisations ‎and individuals such as Mother Teresa.
  • During his visit to Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Indo-Russian Innovation Bridge, an online platform to promote joint innovations.
    • The facility is meant to bridge the gap between Indian and Russian startup ecosystems.
  • Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ordered to lift all limits on Nuclear Research and Development as pa rt of the third step in reducing Iran's commitments to the 2015 nuclear deal. 
    • Rouhani announced that from tomorrow, Iran will begin developing centrifuges to speed up uranium enrichment. Iran's move comes in retaliation to the sanctions imposed on it by the US.
  • The 2 day National Conference on ‘India-Africa Partnership in a Changing Global Order: Priorities, Prospects and Challenges’ held in New Delhi. 
    • It was organized by Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA).
    • As the Chairman of the ICWA, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu delivered the valedictory address.
National Current Affairs
  • Teachers Day‬ is being observed across the country today (5th September).
    • Important Points to Note :
      • 5th September is celebrated as Teachers Day as a mark of respect to teachers and their contributions to the society.
      • This day commemorates birth anniversary of former President Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher par excellence, and his contribution towards Indian education system.
      • He was honored with  Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954.
      • This is his 131st Birth Day.
      • Since 1962, his birthday is celebrated in India as Teachers' Day.
    • President Ram Nath Kovind today gave away the National Teachers' Award to 46 teachers in New Delhi. 
      • This award is given to meritorious teachers on Teachers Day to celebrate the unique contribution of teachers and to honour those teachers who have improved the quality of school education and enriched the lives of students.
  • Nuakhai Juhar, a harvest festival welcoming the newly harvest crop of the season was celebrated in Odisha.
    • Note : Also known as Nuakhai Parab or Nuakahi Bhetghat, this is one of the most ancient festivals celebrated in Odisha. 
  • New Delhi dropped six places to 118 on a list of the world's most liveable cities due to the downgrade in its culture and environment score, an annual survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit announced today. 
    • As per the rankings, Mumbai fell two places since last year to 119
    • A total of 140 countries were ranked in the survey.
  • The Rajasthan High Court has declared an amendment to Rajasthan Ministers Salaries Act, 1956 as "unconstitutional". 
    • Under the amendment, the former CMs, who had governed for five years, were entitled to free bungalows, personal secretaries, and a driver for lifetime. 
    • The amendment by Vasundhara Raje-led government also allowed CMs who served less than five years to avail certain facilities.
  • The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution has announced a blanket ban on all types of single use plastic products in various departments of Ministry and all its Public Sector Units (PSUs) including Food Corporation of India (FCI) starting from 15 September 2019.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made it mandatory for banks to link all of their new loan products, be it personal, housing or auto to an external benchmark like the policy repo rate.
    • This move is likely to cheer borrowers ahead of the festive season as banks will now be forced to pass the entire rate cut benefit announced by RBI in recent months and offer lower interest rates.
  • While addressing the Plenary Session of 5th Eastern Economic Forum in Russia TODAY, PM Narendra Modi announced that India is going to offer $1-billion loan to Russia for development of the Far East
    • India and Russia will target $30 billion of annual trade by 2025 and have decided to work on industrial cooperation and create technological and investment partnerships.
  • Indian multinational corporation Wipro has secured a 7-year contract valued at $300 million (₹2,160 crore) from ICICI Bank to provide a range of services.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to increase price of ethanol procured by public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for one year starting December 2019.
Science & Technology
  • The 1st National Conference on Cyber Crime Investigation and Cyber Forensics concluded today at Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Headquarters in New Delhi. 
    • This conference was inaugurated by CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla.
    • The 2-day conference covered one of the mandates of CBI which is to investigate crimes with inter-state and international ramifications.
  • The United States has for the 1st time imposed sanctions on Iran's civilian space agency and two research organisations, saying they're being used to advance Iran's ballistic missile programme. 
Awards & Honors
  • Bangladesh's Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was conferred the 'Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis ' award by the Vatican for his contribution towards establishing peace and harmony. 
    • The award is a recognition for distinguished work by an individual for promoting peace and dialogue among people.
New Appointments
  • Pushpa Kolhi has become the 1st Hindu woman to be inducted into Pakistan's Sindh Police after passing the provincial competitive examinations. 
    • Note : Earlier in January this year, Pakistani Hindu woman named Suman Pawan Bodani was appointed a judge to the civil and judicial magistrate.
  • American telecom company AT&T has appointed WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey as the new President and COO. 
    • Stankey will continue as WarnerMedia CEO and take on the new position on October 1. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • South African Cricket team will begin their India tour from the 15th of this month.
    • They are scheduled to play 3 T20s and as many Tests against India. 
    • During their last tour of India, South Africa had won the T20 and ODI series but lost the Tests.
  • Former Pakistan Captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been appointed the head coach and chairman of selectors of Pakistan. 
  • In Table Tennis, the Indian boys team has settled for a Silver medal after losing the final 0-3 to top seed China at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships held at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
