International Current Affairs
  • Today (27th September) is World Tourism Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
    • The World Tourism Day celebration was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the year 1980.
    • This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. 
    • The official celebrations this year's World Tourism Day took place in Budapest, Hungary.
    • In India, the celebrations began in Goa and are organised by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC). 
    • Theme of World Tourism Day 2019 : “Tourism and Jobs – A better future for all
  • India advanced 4 places from 48th to the 44th in the recently released IMD World Digital Competitiveness ranking 2019

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met today in New York. 
    • Both leaders discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.
    • The meeting took place amid tensions between Iran and the US, and the two leaders also exchanged views on the situation.
  • Saudi Arabia will offer tourist visas for the 1st time, launching a new visa regime for 49 countries
    • Female tourists will not be required to wear the body-covering abaya robe but will be required to wear "modest clothing". 
    • Note : Saudi visas are currently restricted to expat workers, their dependents and Muslim pilgrims travelling to holy sites in Mecca and Medina.
  • At an annual BRICS meeting on the margins of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly today, the BRICS nations called for the need for early adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT)
    • "The ministers reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed", a statement released by the countries stated.
  • To tackle Islamophobia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia will jointly launch an English language TV channel.
    • The announcement came following a meeting between the three countries' leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
    • Series and films would be produced on Muslim history to educate/inform our own people and the world.
National Current Affairs
  • The residents of Delhi can avail the three emergency services of Police, Fire brigade and Ambulance by dialling a single number 112.
    • A person can dial 112 from phone or press the power button thrice on smartphone quickly to activate a panic call to Emergency Response Centre (ERC).
  • With an aim to spread awareness about nutrition of children and women, the Department of Women & Child Development and Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) unveiled a mascot named ‘Tikki Mausi’. 
    • The state government initiative highlights that Women and children are central to any welfare programme.
    • Tikki Mausi is gregarious character and is an empathetic protagonist with extensive knowledge on all issues related to women and children, thus loves to talk to people and raise their awareness on key positive social behaviors and practices.
    • The mascot has been named so in reference to second mother of a child.
  • In line with India’s intended target of becoming TB-free India before 2025, the ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched ‘TB Harega, Desh Jeetega’ campaign in New Delhi. 
    • Along with the campaign government also launched ‘National TB Prevalence Survey’, the country’s largest-ever conducted TB prevalence survey.
    • Note : The global target to eliminate TB worldwide is 2030.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Delhi Police has filed an FIR against Lakshmi Vilas Bank's board directors, on a complaint by Religare Finvest (RFL)
    • The FIR alleged the directors misappropriated ₹790 crore that RFL kept with the bank as a fixed deposit. 
Science & Technology
  • American multinational technology company Google is celebrating its 21st birthday today (September 27, 2019).
    • Google was founded by PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. 
    • They named its “Googol”. Googol is a mathematical term and it equals to 10 raised to the power of 100.
Awards & Honors
  • The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has been selected as the best airport in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of services it offered to passengers. 
    • CIAL topped in the 5-15 million passenger category in Airport Service Quality's (ASQ) annual survey conducted by Airport Council International (ACI). 
  • Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been conferred with prestigious ‘Vaccine Hero’ award of Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisations (GAVI) in recognition of Bangladesh’s outstanding success in vaccination to immunise children. 
  • President of India Ram Nath Kovind, presented Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes 2019, for outstanding contributions in science and technology at a function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Here is the winners list in various categories :

New Appointments
  • Army Chief General Bipin Rawat formally took over the post of Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) in New Delhi today. 
    • He received the baton from outgoing Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa.
  • The President of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Adille Sumariwallam has been re-elected as Member of Council of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)
    • His election is for a second four-year term.
  • The Bulgarian Economist Christina Georgieva was appointed as the new head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
