National Current Affairs
  • Nation celebrates it's 73rd Independence Day today (15th August) with patriotic fervour.
    • The last Viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten chose August 15 for making India independent to mark the second anniversary of Japan's surrender in the World War II. 
    • He was the Supreme Allied Commander of South-East Asia Command and had accepted Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces himself on August 15, 1945, marking the end of the World War II. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hoisted the National Flag for the 6th straight time at the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day. 
    • With this, he equalled the number of times late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had hoisted the flag on the occasion of Independence Day.  
    • Important Note :
    • During his speech, Modi announced that India will have a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who will head all 3 forces- Army, Air Force and Navy
    • The decision has been made to "further sharpen coordination between the forces".
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has announced the creation of 2 new districts in the state, taking the total number of districts to 37.
    • Vellore district will be trifurcated into Vellore, Tirupattur and Ranipet
  • Tamil Nadu state has officially declared Tamil Yeoman (Cirrochroa thais) as the state butterfly to symbolise its rich natural and cultural heritage. 
    • With this, the state has became 5th Indian state to declare its state butterfly. 
    • Maharashtra was 1st state to officially declare Blue Mormon (Papilio polymnestor) as its state butterfly, way back in 2015 followed by Uttarakhand (Common peacock), Karnataka (Southern bird wings) and Kerala (Malabar banded peacock).
  • On the occasion of 73rd Independence Day, Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh dedicated 3rd phase of ‘Jung-E-Azadi’ memorial to people who were killed in Jallianwala Bagh massacre and unsung heroes who were incarcerated in Andaman Cellular jail during freedom struggle.
  • Union Ministry of Railways launched CORAS (Commando for Railway Security) of Indian Railways. 
    • It is separate Commando Unit of Railway Protection Force (RPF). 
    • It has been carved out from motivated and willing young staff of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF).
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India has contributed $1 million to United Nation Special Purpose Trust Fund (SPTF) for Resident Coordinator System showing India’s willingness and happiness to tangibly contribute to reform of UN Development system.
    • Note : SPTF is a specific fund housed within United Nation Secretariat (one of 6 major organs of United Nations) established to receive, consolidate, manage and account for all contributions as well as financial transactions of new Resident Coordinator (RC) system in a transparent and effective way. 
Science & Technology
  • Researchers from Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, have developed process of synthesizing bone implant materials from eggshells.
    • Through this process bone substitute materials such as tricalcium phosphate, a commonly-used bone substitute material can be produced from natural sources.
MOUs & Agreements
  • 16 states out of 18 selected states have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Union Ministry of Textiles for skilling about 4 lakh workers as part of Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector (SAMARTH), a scheme for capacity building and skilling in the textile sector.
    • Once the agencies that are nominated by the states provide training to the workers, they would be provided jobs in the textiles industry.
    • 16 states that have signed MoUs are Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Karnataka,Manipur, Haryana, Meghalaya, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand
    • Jammu & Kashmir and Odisha earlier had agreed to be on board, but did not sign MoU.
Awards & Honors
  • CRPF officer Harshpal Singh was awarded Kirti Chakra on Independence Day for displaying exemplary bravery in an operation wherein three JeM terrorists were killed. 
    • Singh, who has received several gallantry awards since he joined CRPF in 2004, had continued fighting despite suffering bullet and grenade blast injuries. 
    • He said, "I'm elated. I'm also feeling good for my Battalion, my organisation."

Deaths
  • Veteran actress Vidya Sinha (71), known for yesteryear films like 'Chhoti Si Baat', 'Rajnigandha' and 'Pati Patni Aur Woh', passed away.
New Appointments
  • Harshad Pandurang Thakur was appointed as Director of National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW) for a period of 5 years.
Sports Current Affaris
  • 7 days after his retirement as player from all forms of cricket, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been named as the new head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
    • He played 370 T20 matches, scoring 9,922 runs.
    • Note : McCullum had represented KKR as a player first from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2013.
  • India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets (DLS) in the rain-curtailed 3rd ODI at Trinidad to clinch the three-match series 2-0. 
    • This is India's 9th straight ODI series victory against West Indies dating back to January 2007 and their third straight away ODI series victory. 
    • The two-match Test series will begin on August 22.
  • India captain Virat Kohli has become the 1st batsman to score 20,000 runs in international cricket in a decade
    • Kohli, who scored his 43rd ODI hundred in the third ODI against West Indies, has aggregated 20,018 out of his 20,502 runs in 2010s.
    • Kohli also equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record for most hundreds against one opposition in ODIs (nine).
  • Liverpool defeated Chelsea 5-4 in penalty shootout to win the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul .
  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated Naval Tata Hockey Academy (NTHA), a high-performance centre for hockey at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha for grooming best hockey talent in State. 
    • The Academy is named in honour of Naval H. Tata to commemorate his contribution to hockey in India as well as his achievements as a sports administrator.
