International Current Affairs
  • Today (12th August) is International Youth Day.
    • The first International Youth Day was observed on 12th August 2000 by United Nations.
    • The purpose of this day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth.
    • Theme of International Youth Day 2019 : “Transforming Education
  • Today (12th August) is World Elephant Day.
    • This is an international annual event, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants.
  • On the 1st day of his 3 day visit to China, External Affairs Minsiter S Jaishankar today met Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan
    • "We reached a consensus in Astana two years ago that at a time when the world is more uncertain, our relationship should be a factor of stability," Jaishankar said.
    • Indian envoy to China Vikram Misri was also present during the meeting.
National Current Affairs
  • Eid-ul-Azha, the festival of sacrifice is being celebrated with religious fervour and enthusiasm in various parts of the country today. 
    • The faithfuls thronged Eidgahs and mosques this morning to offer Eid prayers and exchanged Eid greetings.
    • Note : Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his only son in the obedience of God's command. 
  • The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is organizing exhibition on ‘DAE Technologies: Empowering India through Technology’ at New Moti Bagh recreation club, New Delhi. 
    • The 2-day exhibition on DAE’s spin-off technologies for Non-Power Applications (NPAs) is open to public for 11-12 August 2019.
  • Virasat-e-Khalsa museum located in Anandpur Sahib town in Punjab is set to find a place in Asia Book of Records for becoming most visited museum in Asian sub-continent on a single day
    • The Museum witnessed a record footfall of 20,569 visitors on a single day on 20 March 2019.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a year-long programmes and functions from today to commemorate the Birth centenary (100 years) of its founder and eminent space scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai
    • Inaugural function has been organized at Gujarat University convention Hall in Ahmedabad (birth place of Sarabhai) this morning.  
    • Note : Vikram Sarabhai had set up India's first rocket-launching site near Thiruvananthapuram and founded ISRO in 1969.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will feature in a special episode of the iconic survival television series 'Man Vs Wild' on Discovery channel tonight. 
    • It will be broadcast at 9 PM. 
    • The show will be hosted by renowned adventurer Bear Grylls
    • Shot in a Jim Corbett National Park, the show will create awareness about environmental changes and wildlife conservation. 
Books & Authors
  • Veteran actor Anupam Kher’s autobiography titled “Lessons Life Taught Me, Unknowingly” was launched at a special event at Consulate General of India in New York. 
    • It was unveiled by Bollywood Actor Rishi Kapoor, along with wife Neetu Kapoor.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Mukesh Ambani has announced that Jio GigaFiber broadband services will be launched on commercial basis on September 5. 
    • The Jio GigaFiber plans will be priced between ₹700-₹10,000 per month.
    • Ambani said that the company plans to reach 20 million residences and 15 million business establishments. 
    • He added that Jio GigaFiber is currently in 5 lakh homes on a pilot basis.
Awards & Honors
  • Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju today conferred the National Youth Awards for 2016-17 on twenty individuals and three organisations at a function in New Delhi today on the occasion of International Youth Day.
    • The awards are presented to young persons and voluntary organization every year in recognition of their outstanding work in the field of national development and social service.
    • The awards aim towards encouraging them to develop a sense of responsibility to the community and also to improve their own potential as a good citizen.
    • Note : An individual award comprises a medal, a certificate and cash prize of 50 thousand rupees while a cash prize of two lakh rupees is given to the youth organisation.
MOUs & Agreements
  • A peace agreement was signed between Government of India, State government of Tripura and Tripura’s banned insurgency group National Liberation Front of Twipra led by Sabir Kumar Debbarma (NLFT-SD).  
    • As per the agreement NLFT-SD has agreed to abjure path of violence and join mainstream.
    • A Memorandum of Settlement was also signed in this regard between, Centre, State Government of Tripura and NLFT-SD with group also being agreed to surrender its 88 cadres with their weapons.
New Appointments
  • Biologist Chandrima Shaha will become the 1st woman to head the Indian National Science Academy (INSA)
    • Shaha was previously the vice-president of INSA and the director of the National Institute of Immunology in Delhi.
Sports Current Affairs
  • World number two Rafael Nadal defeated Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final to win his 5th Rogers Cup title
    • With this, Nadal secured a record-extending 35th Masters 1000 title. 
  • Chennai Lions has defeated Dabang Delhi in final to win Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) crown
  • India's Sourabh Verma defeated Loh Kean Yew of Singapore to win the Men's singles title of Hyderabad Open BWF Tour Super 100 tournament held at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad. Here is the complete winners list.
