International Current Affairs
  • Today (17th July) is World Day for International Justice (International Justice Day).
    • This day is celebrated throughout the world as part of an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice.
    • Important Note : July 17 was chosen to celebrate this day, because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court (ICC).
  • Today (17 July) is ‘World Emoji Day’.
    • Emoji enthusiasts around the world have been celebrating this day since 2014.
    • The date was kept after Apple's emoji artwork for calendar, which displays July 17.
  • The 8th meeting of India-Uzbekistan Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism was held in New Delhi yesterday.
    • The Group discussed measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the sphere of counter-terrorism through information sharing, mutual capacity building and sharing of best practices.
    • Cooperation in multilateral fora including UN, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure and EAG was also discussed.
    • Note : The next meeting of the Joint Working Group will be held in Uzbekistan on a mutually convenient date.
  • Sudan's ruling military and opposition leaders have signed a power-sharing deal. 
    • This deal establishes a new transitional ruling body which will comprise of civilians and military leaders
    • As per the agreement, a general will head the body for the first 21 months, then a civilian-run administration would take over for the remaining 18 months.
National Current Affairs
  • The West Bengal government today announced that the Members of families with a gross annual income of below ₹8 lakh will be eligible for 10% reservation in civil posts and services.
    • People who are not covered under reservation schemes for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes, will get reservation in direct recruitment in civil posts and services, and in admissions to educational institutions.
  • The Bihar government has announced that it would provide ₹1.5 lakh to Transgenders who want to undergo sex change operation. 
    • The government also announced jail from six months to two years to those who refused to give them houses on rent or violate their rights. 
Awards & Honors
  • American fantasy drama television series 'Game of Thrones' season 8 has secured 32 nominations at 71st Emmy Awards, creating a record for the most number of Emmy nominations received in a single year. 
    • It secured nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as for editing, cinematography and directing along with acting categories.
    • Note : Drama series 'NYPD Blue' earlier held the record with 27 nominations in 1994.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • With $108 billion wealth, French luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault's surpassed Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates to become the world's 2nd-richest person
    • Gates is now the world's third-richest person with $107 billion.
  • American e-commerce giant Amazon has entered the edtech sector in India with the launch of an IIT-JEE exam preparation app called 'JEE Ready'
    • Amazon has reportedly partnered with coaching institutes to prepare 'All India Mock Test' to be offered in the app.
  • India and Italy have decided to set up a fast track mechanism to facilitate investors and companies.
    • A meeting in this regard was held in New Delhi yesterday.
    • The meeting was attended by Ambassador of Italy to India, Lorenzo Angeloni and Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ramesh Abhishek.
    • The fast-track system in Italy aims to identify and solve problems faced by Indian companies and investors.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Supreme Court of India has constituted a High Powered Committee to urgently frame and implement an Emergency Response Plan for protection of two Indian Bird species (Great Indian Bustard and Lesser Florican) which are in the danger of extinction.
    • Both the birds are protected under Wild Life (Protection) Act (WPA), 1972 but despite being accorded highest level of protection under national law, birds face threat of imminent extinction.
    • The 3 Member Panel comprising of :
      • Deepak Apte - Director of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS)
      • Asad R Rahmani - Former Director of BNHS and member of governing body of Wetlands International South Asia
      • Dhananjai Mohan - Chief Conservator of Forests of Uttarakhand.

New Appointments
  • Ursula von der Leyen (Germany) was elected as the 1st female President of the European Commission by the European Parliament.  
    • She is going to replace Jean-Claude Juncker who is set to step down on October 31.
  • Following a Cabinet reshuffle in CM Arvind Kejriwal's government, Delhi Law Minister Kailash Gahlot was given an additional charge of the Environment, Forest and Wildlife Departmen
    • Imran Hussain, who previously held the department, will now have Food and Supply and Election portfolios. 
    • Gahlot also has Revenue, Transport, IT and Administrative Reforms portfolios.
  • Former Supreme Court judge Justice A K Sikri has been appointed as an International Judge of Singapore International Commercial Court.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal opened the 21st edition of Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack today.
    • The event will witness the top players from India, Australia, England, Malaysia, Scotland and Singapore among other nations competing for coveted titles.
    • The tournament will conclude on Monday.
  • International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) today approved dates for the 2020 ISSF World Cup, which will be conducted in Delhi.
    • The World Cup which involves events in rifle, pistol and shotgun will be held from 15th to 26th March 2020. 
    • The tournament will be the season-opening World Cup for rifle and pistol shooters, and second in 2020 for shotgun.
  • India opener Rohit Sharma ended 2019 World Cup as the highest run-scorer with 648 runs in nine innings. 
    • With this, he became the 3rd Indian to end a World Cup edition as the top run-getter after Sachin Tendulkar (1996, 2003) and Rahul Dravid (1999).
