International Current Affairs
  • To discuss draft agreement and operationalisation of the Kartarpur corridor and related technical issues, the 2nd round of India-Pakistan meeting on Kartarpur Corridor held today at the Attari-Wagah border.
    • The corridor will connect Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district and facilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib, which was established in 1522 by Sikh faith founder Guru Nanak Dev. 
    • After this meeting, Pakistan has agreed to build a bridge across zero line of the Kartarpur corridor to provide all-weather connectivity and allow 5,000 Sikh pilgrims to travel daily after the corridor becomes operational.
National Current Affairs
  • A 2- day Swachhata Campaign began in the premises of Parliament House in New Delhi today.
    • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi participated in the cleanliness drive.
  • The government is going to impose a ₹10,000 penalty on individuals who fail to quote their Aadhaar number accurately in the documents related to high-value transactions from September 1, 2019. 
    • These transactions include buying a car or home, traveling overseas or making investments. A similar penalty may be imposed on the person supposed to authenticate the identification number.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To help visually challenged people to identify currency notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) planning to come up with a Mobile application
    • The app would be able to identify the denomination of notes by capturing the image of the notes placed in front of the mobile camera. 
    • It will also generate an "audio notification" of the currency note denomination.
  • A US delegation led by Assistant Trade Representative Christopher Wilson held bilateral talks with a team of Indian officials headed by Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Sanjay Chadha in New Delhi today.
    • The two sides discussed the broad contours of bilateral trade and commercial ties and agreed to continue discussions for achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
    • Both countries have agreed to further grow their economic relationship and address mutual trade concerns.
  • The Allahabad Bank today announced that it reported fraud of ₹1,775 crore by bankrupt steelmaker Bhushan Power & Steel
    • Note : On July 6, state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) said it had reported an alleged fraud of ₹3,805 crore in Bhushan's accounts.

  • An internal working group of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on comprehensive review of market timings has suggested calibrated extension of currency market hours, from 9 am to 9 pm for both over-the counter and exchange traded.
    • Note : Presently, the markets close at 5 pm.
Science & Technology
  • Glasgow University physicists have unveiled the 1st-ever image capturing quantum entanglement, or "Bell entanglement", depicting two photons interacting and sharing physical states for an instant. 
    • A pair of photons were shot from a laser, split and sent on separate paths before being captured by a special camera. 
    • The image shows the photons mirroring each other to form a ring shape.
  • An Agri-Business Incubation Centre has started in Chhattisgarh under the National Agriculture Development Scheme- RAFTAAR.
    • The centre is set up by the Union Agriculture Ministry in the Indira Gandhi Agriculture University of Raipur.

    • RAFTAAR : Remunerative Approaches For Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvination
    • The objective of the scheme is to make farming a remunerative economic activity by strengthening farmer’s efforts, risk mitigation and promoting agri-business entrepreneurship.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded an over $73-million contract to Silicon Valley-based startup Made In Space to demonstrate the ability of a small spacecraft, Archinaut One, to 3D print spacecraft components in low-Earth orbit. 
    • The spacecraft will print two beams extending 32 feet out from each side of the spacecraft.
    • It could launch as early as 2022.

  • Director Kaushik Ganguly's Bengali film 'Nagarkirtan' has won 4 Awards ('Best Feature Film', 'Best Director', 'Best Actor' and 'Best Original Score') at this year's SAARC film festival.
    • The movie is about the love story of a transwoman and a flautist.
Deaths
  • US-born Fernando José "Corby" Corbató (93), credited with inventing the computer password, passed away.
    • Corbató led the development of the Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS), regarded as one of the world's first operating systems. 
    • It allowed multiple people to use a computer at the same time.
  • Former Bangladesh military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad (89) died today. 
    • He had seized power in a coup in 1982, overthrowing the then President Abdus Sattar. Ershad declared himself President in 1983.
New Appointments
  • Former India wicketkeeper Kiran More has been appointed as the Interim coach of USA's senior National team
  • Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed BL Santosh as its National General Secretary (Organisation). 
    • He has replaced Ramlal, who went back to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh after serving for one of the longest terms in the key party post.  
Sports Current Affairs
  • World number seven Simona Halep defeated seven-time champion Serena Williams in the women's singles final to clinch her 1st-ever Wimbledon title
    • With this, the 27-year-old became the 1st Romanian to win the Wimbledon singles' title. 
  • Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah became the 1st Colombians to win a Grand Slam Men's Doubles title today by defeating France's Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
  • Football's governing body FIFA is set to double the minimum ban for player incidents involving racism to 10 games. 
    • Additionally, a football match will be forfeited by the team if their supporters are found to be guilty of racist and other discriminatory behaviours. 
    • FIFA also expanded the scope of what is to be considered discriminatory behaviour.
  • South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has stepped down as the head coach of the Indian Premier League outfit Kolkata Knight Riders
  • The Indian women's football team jumped six places to reach the 57th spot in the latest FIFA team rankings 2019
  • The Indian pair of G. Sathiyan and Anthony Amalraj won bronze in Men’s Doubles at World Tour Platinum Australian Open Table Tennis 2019 held in Geelong near Melbourne in Australia.
