International Current Affairs
  • The Indian and French air forces will carry out a 2-week-long mega air exercise, Garuda, beginning July 1 in France.
    • A fleet of Sukhoi-30 fighter jets of the Indian Air Force will engage in dogfights with France's Rafale multirole aircraft in simulated scenarios. 
    • The exercise will be a boost in the military-to-military ties.
  • A delegation headed by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot is leaving for Argentina to participate in the “2nd Global Disability Summit” to be held at Buenos Aires, Argentina from during June 6 to 8.
    • The objective of the summit is to deliberate on issues across the world concerning empowerment and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and to work out a mechanism for enabling them to live an independent and dignified life.
National Current Affairs
  • Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma informed that the people of the state planted 1.5 million trees across all the 11 districts to mark the World Environment Day
  • The Centre has reconstituted 8 Cabinet Committees including the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet, among others and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is part of all these committees. 
    • Of the 8 Cabinet Committees, PM Narendra Modi is part of 6 committees.
  • Mumbai had the worst traffic congestion in 2018, an analysis of 403 cities across 56 countries on six continents in 'Traffic Index-2018', compiled by location technology specialist TomTom, has found. 
    • Mumbai was followed by Colombia's Bogota, Peru's Lima and Delhi in traffic congestion. 
  • The “Kharga Prahar”, a major training exercise conducted by the Indian Army in Punjab was recently concluded.
    • The exercise was successful in validating many important operational aspects and brought out valuable lessons as also reinforced a high degree of operational preparedness of the Kharga Corps.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To boost digital transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to remove charges levied by it for transactions processed in the RTGS and NEFT systems
    • Banks will be required to pass these benefits to their customers and instructions to banks in this regard will be issued within a week. 
    • The central bank levies minimum charges on banks for such transactions.
  • In it's 2nd bi-monthly monetary policy review, the RBI reduced its repo rate by 25 bps to 5.75% to boost growth after GDP growth slowed to a five-year low of 5.8% last quarter. 
  • Barbadian singer Rihanna has been named the world's richest female musician by Forbes magazine with an estimated wealth of $600 million. 
    • Majority of her wealth comes from her partnership with LVMH, the French luxury goods giant run by the world's third-richest person Bernard Arnault. 
  • The World Bank has retained its forecast of India's growth rate at 7.5% for the next three fiscal years. 
    • The growth will be supported by robust investment, private consumption and a more accommodative monetary policy, the bank said. 
  • The Pakistani military has cut the defence budget for the next fiscal year as the financial crisis-hit country launches an austerity programme.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Government of India (GoI), Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) and the World Bank today signed a $287 million loan agreement for the Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme
    • The programme aims to improve the quality of health care, reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and fill equity gaps in reproductive and child health services in Tamil Nadu.
Awards & Honors
  • Veteran Malayalam actress Sheela (76), has been honoured with the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award in recognition of her contribution to the Malayalam film industry.
    • The award, which includes a cash prize of Rs 500,000 and a citation, is the Kerala government's top film award for a film veteran.
Science & Technology
  • Social networking giant Facebook has announced its 1st interactive game show, titled “Confetti” in India.
    • Starting June 12, the interactive show will air from Wednesday to Sunday on Facebook’s dedicated video platform - Facebook Watch, the company said in a statement.
    • First launched in the US, the interactive game will challenge participants to answer pop culture trivia questions for a chance to win Rs 3 lakh as cash prize everyday.
Deaths
  • Lennart Johansson (89), who oversaw the introduction of the Champions League in 1992 during his 17-year reign as president of European football's governing body, has passed away.
New Appointments
  • Wipro, a leading IT, consulting and business process services company, today announced Rishad Premji, Chief Strategy Officer and Member of the Board, will take over as the Executive Chairman of the company.
    • Azim Premji, one of the pioneers of the Indian technology industry and founder of Wipro Limited will retire as Executive Chairman on July 30, 2019 after having led the company for 53 years. 
    • However, he will continue to serve on the Board as Non-Executive Director and Founder Chairman.
  • Renowned scientist, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra is appointed as Director-General the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
    • His appointment order was issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India opened their 2019 World Cup campaign with a 6-wicket victory over South Africa yesterday. 
    • Important Points to Note
    • This is the 1st time South Africa have lost each of their first three matches in a World Cup. 
    • Former India captain MS Dhoni sported regimental dagger insignia of the Indian Para Special Forces, also known as the 'balidaan' (sacrifice) badge on his wicketkeeping gloves during the match. 
    • Virat Kohli registered his 50th ODI victory as captain after leading India to a six-wicket victory against South Africa in the match.
