International Current Affairs
  • India has voted in support of Israel at the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to deny observer status to a Palestinian organisation named 'Shahed'. 
    • The organisation claims to deal with human rights and humanitarian issues. 
    • However, Israel claims that 'Shahed' is a terrorist organisation and operates as an arm of the Lebanon-based Hamas terror group.
  • Botswana's High Court today ruled in favour of decriminalising same-sex relations, saying the colonial-era laws were discriminatory and unconstitutional. 
    • The court cited the decriminalisation of same-sex relations in India while delivering the verdict. 
  • The 16th Asia media summit kicked-off in Cambodia today.
    • This summit is deliberating on many issues pertaining to the media and broadcasting industry.
National Current Affairs
  • The Gujarat administration is on high alert to deal with Cyclone Vayu, which is likely to hit the state on Thursday.
    • Vayu is expected to touch Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva as a 'Very Severe Cyclonic Storm' with wind speed 140-150 kmph in the morning. 
  • In a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Bihar government has approved the proposal to punish sons and daughters, who abandon their elderly parents, with jail term. 
    • Such cases will be registered under the non-bailable section after receiving complaints from elderly parents, the proposal by the state's social welfare department mentioned.
  • Union Cabinet has accorded ex-post facto approval for the extension of the term of the Commission to examine the issue of Sub-categorization of Other Backward Classes by 2  more months upto 31st July this year. 
    • Note : This is the 6th extension to the commission whose term would have expired on 31st of May.
  • Union Cabinet has approved the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2019.
    • This bill replaces the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019. 
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill 2019 which will be introduced in both the Houses of Parliament in the forthcoming session.
    • The bill is aimed at providing relief to persons in Jammu and Kashmir residing in areas adjoining international border. 
    • They can now avail reservation in direct recruitment, promotion and admission in different professional courses.
  • Amasebailu in Kundapura Taluk of Udupi district has become Karnataka’s 1st solar-powered Gram Panchayat
    • Over 1800 houses were provided solar lamps at a total cost of 2.13 crore rupees. 
    • The project was funded by Centre and State Government in the ratio of 30:20 and the rest was paid by the Panchayat and charitable organizations.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today constituted a 6-member committee to review the ATM interchange fee structure
    • An interchange fee is paid by one bank when its customer transacts at the ATM of another bank. 
    • The committee will review overall patterns of usage of ATMs and assess the impact, if any, on charges and interchange fees.
    • Head of the Committee : V G Kannan (Chief Executive of Indian Banks’ Association)
    • The committee also consists of senior officers from National Payments Corporation of India, SBI, HDFC Bank, Confederation of ATM Industry and Tata Communications Payment Solutions Limited.
Science & Technology
  • ISRO Chairman K Sivan today announced that India's 2nd Moon mission will be launched on July 15 at 2:51 AM from Sriharikota. 
    • The Chandrayaan-2 satellite, weighing 3.8 tonnes, is expected to land on the Moon on September 6. 
    • This is the most complex mission ever to be undertaken by ISRO that costs under ₹1,000 crore, the ISRO chief said.
Awards & Honors
  • Noted English writer Amitav Ghosh was conferred the 54th Jnanpith award for the year 2018. 
    • The award was given for his outstanding contribution in English. 
    • Note : Mr Ghosh is the 1st English writer to get this award. 
  • Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra will be honoured with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award at UNICEF's annual Snowflake Ball in December. 
  • An 8 year old Indian origin student named Nia Tony was honoured during 22nd edition of Emirates Recycling Awards in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). 
    • She won the award in the paper section in individual category for collecting a total of 14,914 kg of paper waste.
New Appointments
  • Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot has been appointed as the Leader of House in Rajya Sabha.
    • He has replaced BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who had opted out of the government citing health reasons. 
  • Reckitt Benckiser, the maker of Dettol cleaners today named PepsiCo's Global Chief Commercial Officer Laxman Narasimhan as its next CEO.
    • He is going to replace Rakesh Kapoor. 
    • Note : Narasimhan will be the 1st outside leader of the British consumer goods group since its formation in 1999. 
  • China has appointed veteran diplomat Sun Weidong as its new envoy to India.
    • He is going to replace Luo Zhaohui, who has been appointed as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
    • Note : Indian Ambassador to China : Vikram Misri 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian men's archery team secured the Olympic quota for the 2020 Tokyo Games by storming into the quarterfinals of the World Championships with a 5-3 win over Canada in the Netherlands today.
    • Note : This is for the first time after 2012 London Olympics that Indian men could secure a team quota.
  • Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant today brought in as cover for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India's World Cup squad.
  • In Football, the United States recorded the biggest-ever victory in the Fifa Women's World Cup last night when they crushed Thailand, 13-nil in a Group-F match at Reims in France. 
    • Alex Morgan scored five times for the three-time winners and defending champions. 
  • India's 18-year-old top-order batsman Jemimah Rodrigues has been signed by the Kia Super League franchise Yorkshire Diamonds for the 2019 season. 
    • The 18-year old is the 3rd Indian player to feature in the league after Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur
