International Current Affairs
  • The 1st part of the Indo-French joint naval exercise, ‘Varuna kickstarted in the Arabian Sea off the Goa coast. 
    • The joint exercise between the navies of India and France will be conducted till May 10. 
    • Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya is taking part in the drill along with French carrier Charles De Gaulle.
    • Apart from INS Vikramaditya, destroyer INS Mumbai, the Teg-class frigate, INS Tarkash, the Shishumar- class submarine, INS Shankul, and the Deepak- class fleet tanker, INS Deepak, will be participating in this exercise.
    • Note : The Indo French joint naval exercise was first initiated in 1983 and was named as ‘Varuna’ in 2001.
  • The UK has become the world's 1st country to declare an environment and climate emergency
    • The UK Parliament approved Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's motion which calls to aim to achieve net-zero emissions before 2050
    • It also calls for proposals within the next six months to restore the UK's natural environment and deliver a "zero waste economy"
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said India will request that Pakistan be blacklisted by Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global money laundering and terror finance watchdog. 
    • Note : Pakistan has been on the FATF's "grey list" since June 2018, making it harder for it to access international markets.
  • Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar was designated as a Global terrorist under 1267 UN Sanctions Committee today after China lifted the technical hold. 
    • The committee imposes a travel ban on the designated individual and freezes their assets and economic resources. 
    • UN member states are also required to prevent the direct or indirect supply of arms to the designated individual.
  • Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn announced that he had married General Suthida Vajiralongkorn, a former flight attendant and a deputy commander of his bodyguard unit. 
    • She was named as Queen Suthida three days before his scheduled coronation. 
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a “sovereign internet” bill which will allow Russian authorities to isolate the country’s internet
    • The move expands Government Control of Internet, is being publicly denounced by all rights groups in country.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed the launch window for its second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 is from 9th to 16th July 2019 with an expected Moon landing on 6th September 2019
    • The ₹800-crore mission has been delayed since 2016 and was last scheduled for an April launch.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government has authorised the Income Tax Department to share details disclosed by businesses in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) with Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN)
    • The move seeks to help authorities identify discrepancies in GST returns and ITRs and thereby detect tax evaders. 
    • Details including sales, profits and status of filing of ITR will be shared with GSTN.
Deaths
  • Former chief justice of the Kerala and Madras High Courts B Subhashan Reddy (76) passed away. 
    • Reddy, who served as the Lokayukta of the combined Andhra Pradesh state, has also been the 1st chairman of Andhra Pradesh state Human Rights Commission and Lokayukta.
New Appointments
  • Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took over as Vice Chief of the Air Staff today.
    • He has replaced Air Marshal Anil Khosla
  • Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has been named as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
    • With this, he became the 1st non-British President of the club
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela today attained the world number one position in women's 10m air rifle event, while her compatriot Anjum Moudgil rose to number two. 
    • Chandela is among the five Indian shooters to have secured 2020 Olympics quotas for the country.
