International Current Affairs
- International Workers' Day, also called Labour Day or May Day, is being observed today.
- This day is celebrated on May 1st every year to commemorate the struggles of working people throughout the world.
- May Day originated in late 19th century when labour movement to gain the 8-hour work day began.
- Theme of International Labour Day 2018 : “Sustainable Pension for all: The Role of Social Partners”.
- The new imperial era 'Reiwa' began in Japan today as Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne following the abdication by his father former Emperor Akihito.
- Naruhito will inherit imperial regalia in a ceremony to mark his ascension to the throne.
- Following Naruhito's ascension, his younger brother Prince Fumihito became the first in line to the throne.
- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison in the UK for skipping bail in 2012 after an extradition order to Sweden over an allegation of rape.
- Assange was arrested by the UK from Ecuador's embassy last month after the country revoked his asylum.
- He was also arrested on an extradition request by the US.

- Odisha has issued a high alert in 12 districts in view of Cyclone Fani, which is likely to make landfall by Friday afternoon.
- The India Meteorological Department said Fani has "intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm."
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- From May 1, India’s largest bank State Bank of India (SBI) has moved to a new interest rate regime on large savings account deposits as well as short-term loans.
- The bank will link its interest rate on savings account with balance above ₹1 lakh and short-term loans like overdraft and cash credit facility to Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) repo rate, effective 1 May 2019.
- With this, interest rates on large SBI savings account deposits and interest rate on some short-term loans will automatically change as and when RBI changes its repo rate.
- This will help in better transmission of RBI’s policy rates into the banking system.
- Markets regulator SEBI has directed National Stock Exchange (NSE) to pay ₹625 crore for lapses in checking on brokers gaining unfair access through co-location servers placed at the site of exchange.
- NSE has also been prohibited from accessing the securities market for six months.
- The Ministry of Defence awarded Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) a Rs.6311 crore worth contract to build 8 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASWSWCs) for Indian Navy.
- The design and construction of these ships at GRSE is yet another milestone in ‘Make in India’ Initiative.
MOUs & Agreements
- Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) signed an MoU (Memorandum of understanding) for cooperation on projects related to e-mobility.

- Israel honors 1971 war (Bangladesh’s Liberation War) hero Lt. Gen. (retd) Jack Farj Rafael (JFR) Jacob with a plaque on Wall of Honour at the Ammunition Hill, Israel.
- He was one of the most prominent members of India’s relatively small Jewish community, who served as a Lieutenant General in Indian Army and as the chief of staff of Indian Army’s Eastern Command.
- He also fought in World War II and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
- He negotiated the historic surrender of Pakistani troops in Dhaka after the 1971 war.
- He later became Governor of two Indian states Goa and Punjab.
Deaths
- Former US Judge Damon J Keith (96), a grandson of slaves and icon in civil rights movement died today.
- He even being a grandson of enslaved people, later became 6th African American in U.S. history to serve on federal court of appeals.
New Appointments
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the 120 newly-elected members who were sworn-into country's new Parliament today, three weeks after his victory in national election.
Sports Current Affairs
- Barcelona FC has won Spanish La Liga title 2019 by defeating Levante FC by 1-0 goals.
- Note : La Liga is the men's top professional football division of the Spanish football league system.
