International Current Affairs
- Today (8th March) is International Women’s Day.
- This day is observed to recognize women for their achievements without regard to divisions.
- The first National Women's Day was observed by the American Socialist Party on February 28, 1909.
- Theme of International Women’s Day 2019 : 'Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change'.
- The theme will focus on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure.
National Current Affairs
- The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved the setting up of 50 new Kendriya Vidyalayas under Civil or Defence Sectors across the country.
Recent Committees in News
- The Supreme Court's Constitution Bench has referred the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute case for court-appointed and monitored mediation for a "permanent solution".
- Former apex court judge Justice (retd) F M Kallifulla will head the panel of mediators in the case.
- Other members of the panel of mediators include spiritual guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu.
- The Court directs that the panel of mediators will file a progress report of the mediation proceedings within four weeks and the process should be completed within eight weeks.
Science & Technology
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today announced that it will carry out the 1st-ever all-female spacewalk at the International Space Station (ISS) on March 29, with astronauts Christina Koch and Anne McClain.
- Note : Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya, the first woman to go to space twice, became the first female spacewalker on July 25, 1984.
- French space agency CNES today announced that a team of ISRO experts will receive training at France's Toulouse Space Centre from this month in the field of human spaceflight.
- They will also be trained at CADMOS, the centre for development of microgravity applications and space operations, and the MEDES Space Clinic.
- Note : In January, ISRO unveiled its Bengaluru manned space mission centre.
- A 400-year-old Kyoto-based temple has unveiled a robotic avatar of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Kannon, in an attempt to keep the younger generation connected with Buddhism.
- Named 'Mindar', the robot can join its hands and move its eyes and torso while delivering 25-minute-long sermons to worshippers.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Indian government today imposed a complete ban on the import of solid plastic waste.
- Earlier, such imports were partly banned as agencies in Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and Export Oriented Units (EOU) were allowed to import solid plastic waste. The Environment Ministry said the amendment upholds the principles of sustainable development and ensures minimal impact on the environment.
- Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today announced that the Cabinet has approved a plan to revive some stressed thermal power plants to curb power deficit.
- New coal-fired power plants would be set up in Bihar (with the cost ₹10,439 crore) and Uttar Pradesh (with the cost ₹11,089 crore).
- Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri today launched e-Dharti app where all the three modules- Conversion, Substitution and Mutation related to properties have been made online.
- The payment system in Land and Development Office, L&DO has also been completely digitized.
- Work is also going on other three small modules namely Sale Permission, Mortgage Permission and Gift Permission will be completed soon.
- This application will not only benefit public but the Government also in getting to know the actual status of its vacant properties, whether there is any encroachment on the property.
- The Cabinet today approved incentives worth ₹3,300 crore to help sugar mills boost ethanol production capacity.
- The move is expected to reduce surplus sugar output by diverting sugarcane for ethanol production.
- Note : India's sugar mills produced 21.9 million tonnes of sugar between October 2018 and mid-February 2019, nearly 8% more than the year-ago period.
New Appointments
- Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, presently High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Seychelles, has been appointed as the next ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia.
- He is going to replace Ahmad Javed, who had been serving as envoy to Saudi Arabia since December 2015.
- Indian-American television personality and food expert Padma Lakshmi has been appointed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as its newest Goodwill Ambassador, supporting the agency's fight against inequality and discrimination around the world.
Sports Current Affairs
- To pay tribute to the CRPF jawans martyred in Pulwama terror attack and the armed forces, team India players are sporting Army-style camouflage caps in the 3rd ODI against Australia in Ranchi.
- M S Dhoni, who holds an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, presented the caps to the players and the support staff ahead of the match.
- Tamil Nadu's 16-year-old P Iniyan defeated Ukraine's 37-year-old Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk in Noisiel Open chess tournament in France to become India's 61st Grandmaster.
