International Current Affairs
  • US President Donald Trump's 2nd summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place in Hanoi (Capital of Vietnam) later this month. 
    • Trump met Kim for the first summit in Singapore on 12th June 2018. At this summit, the North Korean leader agreed to "work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula."
  • Bangladesh has sought India's support with the early repatriation of the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. 
    • Bangladesh's Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen made the request during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi today. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • The Bangladesh Prime Minister is on a 3-day official visit to India. This is  his first after assuming office January 7.
      • More than 7 lakh Rohingya Muslims crossed into Bangladesh, fleeing the military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine State in August 2017.
  • Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio has declared rape and sexual assault a national emergency after cases of sexual and gender-based violence doubled last year. 
    • Those convicted of raping minors would be sentenced to life in prison.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for the construction of Greenfield Airport at Hollongi in Arunachal Pradesh's Papum Pare district.
    • He also inaugurated an upgraded airport at Tezu in Lohit district. 
  • The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet today approved the construction of two new universities in the state. 
    • The Gurajada Apparao University would be set up in Vizianagaram while the JNTU Amaravati University would be set up in Amaravati.
  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today announced an increase in the monthly pension of freedom fighters, WWII soldiers and their widows. 
    • While the pension of freedom fighters would be increased from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000, that of soldiers of WWII and widows of those who took part in the war would be increased to ₹10,000 from ₹4,000.
  • Bihar Governor Lalji Tandon and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh jointly inaugurated the 3-day Krishi Kumbh in Motihari today.
    • Over fifteen thousand farmers from different states and about two hundred agricultural scientists are participating in the Kumbh. 
    • Objective of Krishi Kumbh : To promote modern techniques and diversification in agriculture that could help in doubling farmers income.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the DD ‘Arun Prabha’ Channel in Itanagar. 
    • It will be a 24x7 satellite television channel and is Doordarshan’s second channel for the north-eastern region, after DD North East.
  • Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu launched two ambitious schemes, the Hirkani Maharashtrachi and District Business Plan Competition in Mumbai today.
    • Under Hirkani Maharashtrachi, women's SHGs will pitch their business plan at taluka level. 
      • Ten groups will be selected from each taluka and Rs. 50,000 will be given to each SHG to implement their idea.
    • Five SHGs at district level will be selected and Rs. 2 lakh will be given to each SHG to take the idea forward.
    • Under District Business Plan Competition, competitors at district level will pitch ideas, out of which five ideas will be selected from agriculture, social service, education and miscellaneous categories. 
      • Work order worth Rs. 5 lakh will be given to the 5 selected ideas.
      • The winners of the District Business Plan Competition will be taken to Delhi to interact with the Prime Minister, the President and the Vice President.
  • Health and Family Welfare Ministry conducted its 8th round of National Deworming Day (NDD) across the country to reduce the prevalence of parasitic intestinal worms among children.
    • During the programme, Albendazole tablets were orally administered to pre-school and school-going children in the age group of 1 to 19 years.
    • Note : As per World Health Organisation report, 64 per cent of the Indian population under 14 years are at risk of such infections
MoUs & Agreements
  • Bangladesh and India today signed four memoranda of understanding (MoU) to further strengthen the existing multifaceted bilateral cooperation. They are :
    1. MoU on mid-career training of 1800 Bangladesh civil servants.
    2. MoU between AYUSH and the Ministry of Health of Bangladesh on cooperation in the field of medicinal plants.
    3. MoU between Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh and Central Bureau of Investigation of India.
    4. MoU between Hiranandani Group and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority to facilitate investments in the Indian Economic Zone in Mongla.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • A Group of Ministers (GoM) led by  Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitinbhai Patel has recommended 5 per cent goods and services tax (GST) for under construction properties and 3 per cent GST for affordable housing sector without input tax credit.
  • Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who holds the Finance portfolio, presented the ruling coalition’s second budget in the state Assembly. 
    • The Budget projects total expenditure of 2 lakh 34 thousand 153 crore rupees allocating 12,650 crore rupees towards crop loan waiver of farmers. 
    • Agriculture and allied sector will get 46,850 crore rupees.
  • In Tamil Nadu, state budget for the next financial year has been presnted by Deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam in the Assembly. 
    • Economic growth of the state is projected to be at 8.16 percent as per preliminary estimates for the current fiscal. 
    • Total revenue for 2019-20 has been pegged at 1,97,721 crore rupees.
Deaths
  • British actor Albert Finney (82), who had been nominated for five Oscars during his career, has died today.
    • While Finney earned his first Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1963 film 'Tom Jones', he was last nominated in 2001 for the film 'Erin Brockovich'.
Books & Authors
  • The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, received the first copy of the book titled “Law, Justice and Judicial Power – Justice PN Bhagwati’s Approach” from Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who formally released it at a function held in New Delhi today.
    • This book is a Festschrift (a collection of writings published in honour of a scholar) comprising of 24 essays written in the honor of the late Justice P.N. Bhagwati (former Chief Justice of India) and contributed by eminent persons cutting across professions and disciplines including former Chief Justices of India and of other countries.
Awards & Honors
  • Oscar-nominated Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television
    • In 2012, Mehta received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, Canada's highest honour in performing arts.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been appointed Australia's assistant coach for the 2019 World Cup. 
    • He is going to replace David Saker.
  • The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) today announced that it will conditionally readmit Russia by next month, lifting a suspension imposed over a doping scandal. 
    • In August 2016 the IPC suspended the RPC because it was necessary and proportionate to the situation they faced and essential to ensure a clean sport.
  • Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga today clinched silver in men's 67-kilogram category, fetching India's second medal in the EGAT's Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
    • Yesterday, world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had won a gold in the women's 48-kilogram category with a total lift of 192 kilograms.
  • Rio Olympic silver medal-winning badminton player P V Sindhu has signed a four-year sports sponsorship deal worth nearly ₹50 crore with Chinese sports brand Li Ning.
