International Current Affairs
  • Today (1st January 2019) is 52nd World Day of Peace.
    • This is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to universal peace.
    • This day was first observed on 1 January 1968.
    • Theme of World Day of Peace 2019 : “Good Politics is at the Service of Peace
    • Important Note : Don't be confused between World Day of Peace and International Day of Peace.  Both are different. The International Day of Peace is observed annually on 21 September
    • Theme of International Day of Peace / World Peace Day 2018 is “The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”
National Current Affairs
  • Karnataka Transport Department has made GPS systems and Emergency 'Panic' buttons mandatory for passenger and commercial vehicles in the state from today. 
    • Once in practice, it will give the state the ability to monitor vehicles and track if there were any issues with overspeeding. 
    • The emergency button will also provide a safe environment for passengers.
  • The Home Ministry has declared Nagaland disturbed area” for six more months till June-end under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)
    • The state is in such a dangerous condition that the use of armed force in aid of civilian power is necessary, the notification said. 
    • Note : AFSPA empowers security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without any prior notice.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed Paytm Payments Bank to restart opening new accounts after more than six months.
    • The bank had violated KYC norms, failed to maintain the prescribed net worth of ₹100 crore and also violated the end-of-the-day ₹1 lakh limit per account. 
  • Private Equity (PE) and Merger and Acquisition (M&A) transactions in India crossed the $100-billion mark in the year 2018, breaking all previous records. 
    • India attracted nearly $35 billion during the year by way of private equity. 
    • A total of over 1,640 transactions were carried out in the country during the year.
  • The Reserve Bank of India today released the 18th issue of the Financial Stability Report (FSR)
    • The FSR reflects the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on risks to financial stability, as also the resilience of the financial system. 
    • The Report also discusses issues relating to development and regulation of the financial sector.
Deaths
  • Veteran Bollywood Actor Kader Khan (81) has passed away.
    • Born on 22 October, 1937 , the actor made his debut in 1973 with Rajesh Khanna's 'Daag', and went on to act in over 300 films. He also wrote dialogues for over 250 movies. 
    • As a screenwriter, Khan frequently collaborated with Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra.
  • Early internet pioneer Lawrence Roberts (81) passed away.
    • Roberts had led the designing of the internet's precursor Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPAnet) in the late 1960s. 
    • After leaving ARPA in 1973, he helped commercialise packet switching technology through his company Telenet.
  • Norman Gimbel (91), the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist, has passed away.
    • Gimbel’s work included Killing Me Softly With His Song – record.
Awards & Honors
  • US-based Indian origin Kathak dancer Anindita Neogy Anaam is going to be honoured with the National Nritya Shiromani Award for promoting the dance form across the world. 
    • This award of national repute has been given in the past to the outstanding Indian classical dance performers and musicians of India and abroad.
  • 3 Indian-origin women scientists were among the 60 Superstars of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) list awarded by Australian government. 
    • They are :

      • Devika Kamath 
      • Asha Rao
  • India’s left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana has won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year
    • Mandhana was also adjudged as the ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year
  • ISRO chairman K. Sivan was presented the National Systems Gold Medal by the Systems Society of India (SSI) during the 42nd National Systems Conference held in Thiruvananthapuram.
    •  The medal acknowledges his outstanding contributions to system science and engineering
Recent Committees in News
  • The Panel headed by B V R Mohan Reddy (IIT-Hyderabad chairman) has suggested All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) not to allow setting up of new Engineering colleges from 2020.
    • The panel also suggested that no additional seats should be approved in traditional engineering areas such as mechanical, electrical, civil and electronics.
    • The panel also recommended to introduce undergraduate engineering programmes exclusively for artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics, quantum computing, data sciences, cybersecurity and 3D printing and design.
  • To ensure the country's effective participation in the Group of 20 industrialized nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an executive order on setting up an Interdepartmental Commission.
    • The 17 member strong commission is meant to coordinate work of federal agencies in ensuring Russia's participation in annual summits.
People in News
  • The 2nd senior-most Supreme Court judge Justice Madan B Lokur retired today. 
    • He was among the 4 judges who held the controversial press conference against the then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra over the issue of allocation of sensitive cases. 
    • He also played an active role in the pursuit of judicial reforms — computerisation of courts, judicial education, legal aid and legal services.
New Appointments
  • Sudhir Bhargava has been appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission (CIC)
    • He was previously Information Commissioner in the CIC.
    • President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Bhargava at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
    • Note : The government also appointed Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha (former IFS officer), Vanaja N Sarna (ex-IRS officer), Neeraj Kumar Gupta (former IAS) and Suresh Chandra (former Law Secretary) as Information Commissioners in the panel.
  • Justice TB Radhakrishnan was today sworn in as the 1st Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, which came into existence from today (1st January 2019) after the bifurcation of the High Court at Hyderabad. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Telangana was carved out of Andra Pradesh in 2014 and the two states continued to have a common high court in Hyderabad.
      • The High Court for Telangana is the 25th High Court in the country.
      • Justice Praveen Kumar was sworn in as the Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, which also came into existence the same day.
  • Ambika Prasad Panda was appointed as Chairman and Managing Director of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)
    • She is at present Director of finance in SECL.
    • She has been appointed the CMD of SECL for a period of five years.
  • Zambian President Edgar Lungu today  appointed William Sikazwe as the New Army Chief.
  • Y. K. Sailas Thangal, who is the ambassador of the India to the Republic of Cote d’ Ivoire has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Liberia with residence in Abidjan.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India's T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur was named the Captain of the ICC women's T20I team of the year
    • Meanwhile, New Zealand's Suzie Bates was named the Captain of the ICC women's ODI team of the year
