National Current Affairs
- President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated the 1st Gyan Kumbh, billed as a premier event of higher education in Uttarakhand.
- This event is being jointly organised by the Higher Education Department of the Uttarakhand Government and the University of Patanjali in Haridwar.
- The higher education ministers of 18 states, the Union HRD minister as well as over 200 academicians from across the country would attend the event.
- Shillong (Meghalaya's capital) is going to host the 3rd edition of the India International Cherry Blossom Festival from 14th to 17th November 2018.
Awards & Honors
- Noted Malayalam novelist and short story writer M Mukundan (76) has been selected for the Kerala government’s highest literary award ‘Ezhuthachan Puraskaram' for the year 2018.
- He has been chosen for his overall contributions to the Malayalam literature.
- Romanian professional tennis player Simona Halep has become the 1st recipient of the Chris Evert Women's Tennis Association (WTA) World No.1 Trophy.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a 59-minute approval portal for loans of up to ₹1 crore to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
- Further, the mandatory sourcing limit by state-run companies from MSMEs has been increased to 25% from the previous 20%.
- India and 7 other nations have been granted a temporary waiver from US sanctions against buyers of Iranian crude oil.
- The US will reimpose sanctions on Iran on November 5, with crude oil being Iran's largest source of income.
- India currently imports nearly 80% of its crude oil consumption.
- The Indian rupee today registered its biggest single-day gain in more than five years, surging by 101 paise to close at 72.44 against the US dollar.
MOUs & Agreements
- India and Japan signed a loan agreement of Rs 18.17 bn for the construction of the Turga Pumped Storage in West Bengal.
- The deal was signed by the Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), C.S. Mohapatra, and Katsuo Matsumoto, chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Deaths
- Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (JUI-S) chief Maulana Sami-ul-Haq was killed by unknown assailants in Pakistan's Rawalpindi today.
- Sami-ul-Haq was known as the 'Father of Taliban' for having taught some of the Afghan Islamist movement's leaders.
New Appointments
- Atul Kumar Goel today assumed charge as Managing Director and CEO of UCO Bank.
- He is going to replace R. K. Takkar, who completed his three-year tenure on November 1, 2018.
- Prior to this assignment, he was executive director of Union Bank of India.
- Olympic bronze medalist and five-time World Champion, M C Mary Kom has been appointed as the brand ambassador of the 10th edition of the Women’s World Championship in New Delhi.
- Senior-most judge of the Hyderabad High Court, Justice Ramesh Ranganathan was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.
- He has replaced Justice K M Joseph, who was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court earlier this year.
- 4 judges MR Shah, Hemant Gupta, Ajay Rastogi and R Subhash Reddy were sworn-in as the Supreme Court Judges.
- With this, the working strength of the apex court raised to 28 judges.
Sports Current Affairs
- India is going to host AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships from 15th to 24th November 2018 at New Delhi.
- Jammu and Kashmir's 30-year-old pacer Mohammed Mudhasir has become the 1st bowler in professional cricket history to dismiss four batsmen LBW in four successive deliveries.
- Mudhasir achieved the feat by dismissing Rajasthan's Chetan Bist, Tajinder Singh Dhillon, Rahul Chahar and Tanvir Mashart Ul-Haq today, becoming only the second player to take four wickets in four balls in Ranji Trophy.
