Hindu Editorial Topic 1 :  "Target 1.5: tackling global warming"
  • Tackling - to try to deal with something or someone
  • Global warming - a gradual increase in world temperatures caused by gases such as carbon dioxide that are collecting in the air around the earth and stopping heat escaping into space
  • Run out - to finish, use, or sell all of something, so that there is none left
  • Intergovernmental - between two or more governments
  • Consensus - a generally accepted opinion or decision among a group of people
  • Reversal - the act of changing or making something change to its opposite
  • Greenhouse gas - a gas that causes the greenhouse effect, especially carbon dioxide
  • Emission - the act of sending out gas, heat, light, etc
  • Severe - causing very great pain, difficulty, worry, damage, etc.; very serious
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Accumulating - to get more and more of something over a period of time
  • Follow-up - to do something in addition to what you have already done, in order to be certain of achieving your aim
  • Extreme - very great in degree
  • Pull back - to decide not to do something that will probably have bad effects
  • Beyond - outside the range or limits of a subject, quality, or activity
  • Pursue - to follow a course of activity
  • Intensity - strength
  • Severity - the seriousness of something bad or unpleasant
  • Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
  • Coastal - land beside a sea
  • Submergence - to go completely under water
  • Significantly - by a large amount, or in a way that is easily noticeable
  • Moderate - neither small nor large in size, amount, degree, or strength
  • Degradation - the process of changing into a worse condition
  • Worsen - to become worse, or to make something worse
  • Prognosis - a statement about what is likely to happen in a particular situation
  • Heatwave - a continuous period of very hot weather, especially when this is unusual
  • Pointer - something that shows the development or progress of a situation
  • Fast-track - a way of achieving something more quickly than usual
  • Pledge - to promise seriously and publicly to do something
  • Scale-up - to make something larger in size, amount etc than it used to be
  • Cutting down - to reduce an amount of something
  • Conservation - the careful use of energy, water, and other resources, so that they are not wasted or lost
  • Afforestation - the process of planting many trees on an area of land
  • Carbon sink - an ocean, forest, or other area of vegetation (=plants and trees) that helps to protect the environment by taking in large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
  • Crucial - something that is crucial is extremely important because it has a major effect on the result of something

  • Allegedly - if someone allegedly does something, another person says that they have done it, even though this has not been proved
  • Revenge - something that you do to hurt or punish someone because they have hurt you or someone else

  • Trigger - to make something happen
  • Discontent - the unhappy feeling that you have when you are not satisfied with something
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Survey - an examination of opinions, behaviour, etc., made by asking people questions
  • Disquiet - a feeling of being very worried or nervous
  • Bubble up - to increase and become more obvious
  • Resentment - an angry unhappy feeling that you have when you think you have been treated unfairly or without enough respect
  • Mandatory - ordered by a law or rule
  • Hire - to pay someone to work for you, especially for a short time
  • Workforce - the total number of people who work in a particular company, industry, or area
  • Domicile - the place where a person lives
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Greasing the wheels - to facilitate, ease, or aid something or some process

  • Looming - (of something unwanted or unpleasant) about to happen soon and causing worry

  • No exception - if someone or something is no exception, they are the same as all others so they can be included in a general statement
  • Nativist - a person who supports the idea of nativism (= the idea that people who were born in a country are more important than people who have come to the country from somewhere else)
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem

  • Paucity - a small amount of something that is not enough
  • Neither...nor - used for showing that something is not true of two or more people, things, actions, qualities, or ideas
