International Current Affairs
  • Today (7th July) is Global Forgiveness Day.
    • This day was created in 1994 by the Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors.
    • Important Note : There is already a Forgiveness Day in August (which is observed on 1st Sunday in August each year), founded by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance, but the Global Forgiveness Day is different. This was founded by CECA (Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors).
  • Today is World Chocolate Day.
    • This day marks 468 years since chocolate was introduced to Europe.
National Current Affairs
  • The Uttarakhand high court has declared the entire Animal Kingdom, including birds and aquatic animals, as a legal entity having rights of a “living person”.
    • From now onwards, they can’t be treated merely as “property”, the bench added.
    • The court also declared all Uttarakhand natives the guardians of animals and endowed them with the duty to ensure their welfare and protection.
  • In a bid to cut costs incurred by the state government, the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today set a one person one car” policy for ministers and bureaucrats and mandated economy class for all domestic air travel.
Awards & Honors
  • Marathon runner Sameer Singh, who completed a 13,750-km-run across India over a span of seven months and six days to spread awareness about 'Bharat Ke Veer', was today felicitated at Attari-Wagah border. 
    • Note : Bharat Ke Veer is a government initiative dedicated towards the welfare of martyrs' families.
Science & Technology
  • Indian IT industry apex body NASSCOM (National Association of Software & Services Companies) has opened Centre of Excellence for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CoE-DSAI) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. 
    • Aim of CoE-DSAI : To nurture innovation in emerging disruptive technologies such as AI and to leverage the power of data science.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's 2nd largest credit card issuer,  SBI Card today announced the launch of a virtual assistant for customer support and services titled 'ELA' (Electronic Live Assistant).
    • Driven by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, ELA is designed to enhance customer experience by providing relevant and instant responses to customer queries.
  • The 5 Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has approved US $6.69 billion dollar budget for 13 peacekeeping operations for year 2018-19. 
    • The budget approved for missions include MINUJUSTH (UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti), MINUSCA (Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Central African Republic), MINURSO (Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara), MONUSCO (Stabilisation Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo) and UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon). 
    • Important Note : The United States is the biggest contributor to the United Nations, paying 22 per cent of the $5.4 billion core budget and 28.5 per cent of the $7.9 billion peacekeeping budget, followed by China (10.3 per cent) and Japan (9.7 per cent).  
  • State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) is going to set up state-of-the-art Civil Aviation Research Organization (CARO) at Hyderabad’s Begumpet Airport. 
    • Foundation stone of the centre was laid by Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu. 
    • For this project, AAI has earmarked Rs 1,200 crore which will be spent over 12 years for research and development (R&D).
  • Facebook's 34-year-old CEO Mark Zuckerberg has dethroned Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett to become the world's third-richest person with $81.6 billion wealth, according to Bloomberg. 
    • Note : Amazon's Jeff Bezos remains the world's richest followed by Microsoft's Bill Gates.
New Appointments
  • Supreme Court judge Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel was appointed as the Chairman of the National Green Tribunal.
  • Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan has been sworn-in as the new Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court this morning.
    • Governor of the Two Telugu States E.S.L Narasimhan administered him the oath of office at a ceremonial function at the Raj Bhavan. 
    • Note : Justice Ramesh Ranganathan had been Acting Chief Justice of Hyderabad High Court for about past two years before the appointment of Justice Radhakrishnan.
Sports Current Affairs
  • France defeated two-time champions Uruguay 2-0 to reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals for the first time since the 2006 edition and overall sixth time. 
    • Note : This was the first time in World Cup history that France defeated Uruguay. 
Careers
  • HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today announced that the national-level engineering and medical entrance examinations, JEE Main and NEET, will be held twice a year from 2019. 
    • The examinations will be conducted online by the newly-formed National Testing Agency (NTA).
