International Current Affairs
  • The first International Day of Parliamentarism is being observed today to highlight the role of parliaments worldwide as indispensable cornerstones of democracy.
    • This date was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution adopted on May 22nd as it coincides with the day in 1889, close to 130 years ago, that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) — the global umbrella organization of parliaments — was founded.
  • The United States has named North Korea as one of the worst human trafficking nations for reportedly the 16th consecutive year. 
    • In its '2018 Trafficking in Persons Report', the US State Department said that the "North Korean government continued to use forced labour in prison camps and labour training centres". 
    • Other nations on the list included China, Russia and Iran.
  • European Union leaders have agreed to a deal on migration after marathon talks today. 
    • Member countries have agreed to set up controlled migration centres to process migrants and distinguish them with "irregular migrants, who will be returned."
  • The French government has announced a plan to reintroduce compulsory national service for all 16-year-olds
    • Under this plan, French boys and girls would do a minimum of one-month service in the first phase which would focus on voluntary teaching and working with charities among others. 
    • The second phase will be voluntary and focus on areas linked to defence and security.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for National Centre for Ageing at All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. 
    • The Centre will provide state of art clinical care to elderly population and shall play key role in guiding research in field of geriatric medicine and related specialties.
    • It will also serve as key training facility for under graduate and post graduate courses. 
    • The Centre will be developed at cost of Rs. 330 crores and shall be completed by February 2020.
Science & Technology
  • Four Chennai based engineering students have developed the world’s lightest satellite which will be launched from a NASA facility in the US by August 2018. 
    • The students built the 4cm ‘cube’ satellite ‘Jaihind-1S’ with a 3D printed outer casing from polylactic acid (PLA) nylon material, making it lighter than a medium sized egg, at just 33.39 grams.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Bank of Maharashtra board today stripped the bank's MD and CEO Ravindra Marathe and Executive Director RK Gupta of all functional responsibilities with immediate effect. 
    • This comes after Marathe and Gupta were arrested in the ₹2,043-crore DSK Group loan fraud case. 
    • Note : The other executive director A C Rout has been given the charge of the bank's CEO.
  • India would start getting data on deposits made by Indians this year in Swiss Banks from 2019 as part of a bilateral treaty signed between the two nations, interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal announced today.
    • He further said that strong action will be taken against those guilty. 
    • Important Note : Money parked by Indians in Swiss banks rose over 50% to Swiss Francs (CHF) 1.01 billion (Rs. 7,000 crore) in 2017, reversing a three-year downward trend.
  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) has approved Life Insurance Corporation (LIC)’s plan to buy 51 per cent stake in IDBI Bank as the insurance regulator gave the insurer exemption from 15 per cent investment cap.
    • The LIC is expected to invest around Rs. 13,000 crore in tranches in the NPA-mired state-run lender.
Deaths
  • Noted Hollywood actor Stanley Anderson (78) passed away.
    • Stanley was best known for his role as Judge Vandelay in Seinfield, an American television sitcom, General Slocum in Spider-Man (2002) and for playing Drew Carry’s father on ABC’s The Drew Carey Show.
New Appointments
  • Portugal’s Antonio Vitorino (61) was elected as next Director General (DG) of International Organization for Migration (IOM), an UN Migration Agency. 
    • He is going to replace William Lacy Swing who will be stepping down after completing the second of two five-year terms. 
  • South Korea's fourth largest conglomerate LG has announced the appointment of Koo Kwang-mo, the 40-year-old son of the family-controlled conglomerate's late Chairman Koo Bon-moo, as a board member of the holding firm and its CEO
    • He has become the fourth-generation leader of the family-controlled conglomerate.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Indian women's T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur became the second Indian cricketer after T20I vice-captain Smriti Mandhana to be selected to play in England's Super League T20 tournament. 
    • Kaur, who was the first Indian to play in Australia's Big Bash T20 league, has signed for Lancashire Thunder.
  • India's Rio Olympics badminton silver-medalist PV Sindhu defeated Carolina Marin (Spain) to reach the semifinal of the Malaysia Open
    • India's world number seven Kidambi Srikanth also reached the semifinal with a straight games win. 
    • Sindhu will now face world number one Tai Tzu Ying, while Srikanth will face Japan's Kento Momota.
