International Current Affairs
- Following the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese envoy to India Luo Zhaohui today unveiled a 4-point vision for future cooperation with India. The four points are :
- Sign a Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation
- Negotiate a bilateral Free Trade Agreement
- Enhance connectivity a
- Work for early harvest on boundary issues
- Spiritual Guru Ravi Shankar inaugurated the largest ever celebration of International Day of Yoga in The Netherlands.
- Several thousands have assembled at the prestigious museum square in Amsterdam to experience the day-long wellness festival.
- The SAARC Development Fund (SDF) is going to launch a Social Enterprise Development Programme (SEDP) as part of its social window.
- The programme will be implemented in all SAARC member states with objective of identifying and building social enterprises by using mix of grants and concessional returnable capital.
- It intends to fund around 80 enterprises across the 8 SAARC member states (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) annually.
- SAARC - South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
- The plenary meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) was recently held at Jurmala, Latvia.
- In this meeting, China announced that will oppose India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) whose plenary session is underway in Bern.
- Important Points to Note :
- Latvia assumed chairmanship of NSG for 2018-19.
- With this, Latvia became 1st Baltic state to chair the NSG.
National Current Affairs
- Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that, the target of replacing bio-toilets with vacuum bio-toilets in trains will be achieved 100 percent by March, 2019.
- He said, the vacuum toilets will be odour-free and the tracks will be cleaner and, it will cut down water usage by 1/20th.
New Appointments
- Ivan Duque was elected as the next President of Colombia .
- He will be Colombia's youngest ever President.
- ICICI Bank is reportedly planning to appoint Sandeep Bakhshi (CEO of ICICI Prudential Life), as the bank's interim CEO, replacing Chanda Kochhar.
- Bakhshi has been the chief of the life insurance arm since August 2010.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) has recommended 22 general managers to be elevated as Executive Directors at the various Public Sector Banks (PSBs).
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister will take the final decision in this regard and will release the names.
- This is the first major exercise undertaken by reconstituted BBB, headed by newly appointed Chairman B P Sharma.
- The UK High Court has ordered embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya to pay a minimum of 2 lakh pounds towards the costs incurred by 13 Indian banks in their legal battle to recover alleged dues.
Science & Technology
- The indigenously upgraded artillery gun Dhanush (also known as Desi Bofors) has successfully completed the third and final user trials and is ready for induction into Indian Army.
- Note : Dhanush is upgraded version of Swedish 155-mm Bofors howitzers, which India procured in the mid-1980s.
- Russia has successfully launched Glonass-M positioning satellite on board of Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket from the Plesetsk space centre in Mirny, Arkhangelsk Oblast.
- The satellite is part of GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Network which provides real-time positioning data for surface, sea and airborne objects around globe, at accuracy reportedly at par with US Global Positioning System (GPS).
- Note : With this launch, there are now total 26 Glonass satellites in orbit.
Books & Authors
- “The Shiva Trilogy” author Amish Tripathi is going to release a new book titled “Suheldev & the Battle of Bahraich”.
- The book is said to revolve around Raja Suheldev, a semi-legendary Indian king from Shravasti (Uttar Pradesh) and the battle fought by him in 1025 AD that drove the Turks away for 170 years.
Sports Current Affairs
- 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer (Switzerland), has won the Stuttgart Open 2018 title in Men's singles category by defeating Milos Raonic (Canada).
- This is Federer's 98th career singles title.
- Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal was the official race starter at the 86th edition of the 24 Hours Le Mans classic endurance race.
- The race, being contested by 180 drivers in crews of three, also features Formula One champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.
- Important Note : The Le Mans race is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing.
