Mr Duque will be sworn in as the country’s new leader on August 7, a week after his 42nd birthday, making him the youngest elected leader in Colombia’s 132-year history as a republic.
Duque captured almost 54% of the vote, putting him 12 points ahead of former leftist guerrilla Gustavo Petro in a tense runoff election that had appeared to be tightening in recent days. His running mate, Marta Lucía Ramirez, will become Colombia's first female vice-president.
Note : This was the first of three big presidential elections in Latin America this year, in the three most populous countries in the region. Mexico holds its election next on July 1 followed by Brazil in October.
