International Current Affairs
  • Today is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
    • This day is an annual celebration of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's principles.
    • This year marks the 67th year of the celebration, which was first officially celebrated in 1948.
    • Theme World Red Cross Day 2018 : “Memorable smiles from around the world”.
    • Important Note : The day is also the birth anniversary of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)'s founder Henry Dunant.
      • He won first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
  • Today is World Thalassemia Day
    • World Thalassemia Day is celebrated every year on 8th of May to increase the awareness about this disease among common public all through the world.
    • About Thalassemia :
    • Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorder which gets inherited from parents to the children through genes. 
    • It causes weakening and destruction of the red blood cells, affects the formation of hemoglobin in the body and causes mild or severe anemia.
    • Theme of World Thalassaemia Day 2018: "Thalassaemia past, present and future: Documenting progress and patients’ needs worldwide".
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Women and Child Development Ministry has proposed allowing victims of Child Sexual Abuse to file police complaints till the age of 25
  • The Indian Railways has decided to use an Artificial Intelligence system to ensure that hygienic food is served
    • As many as 16 kitchens have been equipped with eight CCTV cameras each to track anomalies during the preparing and packaging of the meals.
    • This move came after a CAG report last year announced the food served by the Indian railway's is "unfit for human consumption",
  • Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami has laid the foundation stone for a 50,422-square-foot memorial of late CM J Jayalalithaa in Chennai
    • The memorial, which is set to cost ₹50.8 crore, will be shaped like a phoenix surrounded by gardens and two lion statues at the entrance. 
  • To help violence affected women, the Centre has approved setting up of 100 additional One Stop Centres in nine states.
    • These States are Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
    • Purpose of One Stop Centres : To facilitate integrated services for violence affected women such as police assistance, medical aid, psycho-social counselling and legal aid.
  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has decided to expand Van Dhan Vikas Kendras in Tribal Districts across the country.
    • Aim of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras : To provide skill upgradation and capacity building training to increase the incomes of tribal.
Science & Technology
  • A team of surgeons led by Indian-origin professor Neil Malhotra from the University of Pennsylvania has performed the first-ever robot-assisted spinal surgery
    • The doctors successfully removed a tumour from a patient's neck in the two-day procedure, which involved the risk of permanent paralysis. 
New Appointments
  • Snapchat-owner Snap Inc has appointed Amazon's former Vice President of Finance Tim Stone as it's new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). 
    • He will replace the present CFO Andrew Vollero.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • According to a recently released RBI Data, Indian Banks closed nearly 2,500 onsite ATMs between May 2017 and February 2018
    • As of February 2018, the total number of onsite ATMs of banks had come down to 1,07,630. 
    • However, the number of offsite ATMs saw a slight increase to 99,029, an addition of 669 ATMs in the 10 months.
  • Switzerland-based St Galler Kantonal bank ran a pilot project where it replaced seven of its employees with five robots. 
    • The bank was satisfied with the test results and said it is exploring further assignments for the robots. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Indian Government has signed a loan agreement worth 200 million dollar with the World Bank for the National Nutrition Mission (POSHAN Abhiyaan).
    • This loan will help in achieving the goal of reducing stunting in children upto 6 years of age from 38.4 per cent to 25 per cent by 2022. 
    • About POSHAN Abhiyaan
    • The POSHAN Abhiyaan or National Nutrition Mission (NNM) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. 
    • Aim of POSHAN Abhiyaan : To ensure holistic development and adequate nutrition for pregnant women, mothers and children.

  • The actor who plays 'The Mountain' in Game of Thrones, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, was named as the 2018 World's Strongest Man in Philippines.
Books & Authors
  • One of India’s best-known sports journalists,  Boria Majumdar has written a book titled "Eleven Gods and A Billion Indians".
    • This book chronicles the history of cricket throughout colonial and post-colonial Indian life.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Welsh snooker player Mark Williams has won the 2018 World Snooker Championship final by defeating John Higgins.
  • India has finished on top in the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Colombo. 
    • On the final day of the meet, Indian athletes won nine more Gold medals, ending with a tally of 20 Gold, 22 Silver and 8 Bronze.
    • Hosts Sri Lanka finished second behind India, Pakistan stood at the 3rd position.
  • In Shooting, Olympian Gagan Narang and Pooja Ghatkar clinched a Silver medal in the 10-meter Air Rifle Mixed Team event in the Grand Prix of Liberation International competition at Pilsen in the Czech Republic.
