International Current Affairs
  • Today (5th May) is International Midwives Day.
    • This internationally recognised day is observed by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to highlight the work of midwives.
    • ICM established the idea of the 'International Day of the Midwife' following suggestions and discussion among Midwives Associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992.
    • Theme of International Day of the Midwife 2018 : "Midwives leading the way with quality care"
    • Note : Meaning of Midwife = a nurse whose job is to look after women when they are giving birth to a baby
  • The 12th informal meeting of SAARC Finance Ministers was held in Manila (Philippines) on the sidelines of the 51st Annual Meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
    • The meeting was attended by the Finance Ministers/Heads of Delegations from the SAARC member states.
    • Yuba Raj Khatiwada (Finance Minister of Nepal) chaired the meeting. He underscored the need of concerted efforts to attain the objective of South Asian Economic Union as desired by the leaders of SAARC.

  • To match its clocks with those of South Korea, North Korea went forward in time by 30 minutes today.
    • This comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had promised to unify the time zones of the two nations during his visit to South Korea. 
    • Note : The two countries have had different time zones since 2015.
  • The population of children in Japan fell for the 37th consecutive year.
    • The number of children aged 14 or under fell to 1.5 crore as of April 1 this year, the lowest ever since comparative data became available in 1950.
    • Further, the ratio of children to Japan's overall population dropped to a record low of 12.3%.
National Current Affairs
  • The Maharashtra government is going to increase the height of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial by two metres, making it the tallest statue in the world
    • The Shivaji memorial will now be 212 metres tall, although it was earlier supposed to be 210 metres tall.
  • Students in Karnataka will get extra marks if their parents cast votes in the upcoming assembly elections. 
    • The "Encouraging Marks" will be added in the 2018-19 academic year. 
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today successfully launched a $993-million spacecraft called InSight to study quakes on Mars and explore the Mar's interior. 
    • The 360-kg InSight aims to be the first NASA spacecraft to land on Mars since the Curiosity rover in 2012.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • According to a recent data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Bank deposit growth fell to a five-decade low in the financial year ended March 2018.
    • The data showed that aggregate deposits in the banking system grew a mere 6.7% in 2017-18, the lowest since fiscal 1963. 
    • A total deposit of ₹114 lakh crore was reported in the last fiscal.
  • US state California's economy has surpassed that of the UK to become the world’s fifth largest.

  • The GST Council has decided to introduce a single monthly return for businesses in order to simplify the process and increase compliance. 
    • The new system would come into force in six months and will be applicable for all except for businesses opting for composition scheme and filing nil returns.
New Appointments
  • Indian-American Deepa Ambekar has been appointed as the Interim judge to a US civil court of New York City.
    • With this, she has become the second Indian-American woman judge in the city after Chennai-born Raja Rajeswari
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Academy Team Kochi has won the 3rd edition of National Blind Football Tournament by defeating KWAB Bengaluru at the Jogo Football Arena, Kochi (Kerala)
  • Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was appointed as the Manager of Scottish football club Rangers today. 
    • The former England captain, who represented the national team in 114 matches, will take charge of Rangers this summer on a four-year deal. 
    • He had retired from playing football in 2016 and had been a youth coach at Liverpool since January 2017.
  • A sports initiative 'Star Khel Mahakumbh' was launched at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh in the presence of 1,500 athletes.
    • The initiative has been designed in a manner as to attract participation of at least one lakh youth from across 5000 villages and 800 panchayats.
    • The athletes will compete in volleyball, basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi and athletics.
