International Current Affairs
  • Today (31st May) is World No Tobacco Day.
    • This day is an annual awareness day sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1987 to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage governments to adopt effective policies to reduce smoking and other tobacco use.
    • Theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 : ‘Tabacco and heart diseases’.
  • On on last leg of 3-nation trip (Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore), Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited Singapore
    • This is his second official visit as the Prime Minister to the island nation and is packed with a series of meetings, mainly with the business community.
    • Today's evening he is scheduled to visit India-Singapore Enterprise and Innovation Exhibitions at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. 
    • Aim of this 3 nation visit : To enhance India’s relations and engagements with the three countries, who are members of the ASEAN.
  • Amid its increased cooperation with India in a range of areas, the United States today renamed its Pacific Command to Indo-Pacific Command
    • The Command, which has about 3.75 lakh personnel, is responsible for all US military activity in the greater Pacific region.
  • Former North Korean spy chief and the Adviser to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Yong-chol today arrived in New York, becoming the most senior North Korean official to visit the US in 18 years. 
    • During this visit, he met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and discussed about the uncertainty over the June 12 summit between the leaders of the two countries.
  • The joint military exercise SURYA KIRAN-13 between India and Nepal began at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.
    • The military exercise, which is set to conclude of 12th of June, is a biannual event which is conducted alternatively in Nepal and India every six months.
    • Over 300 soldiers from both the countries are taking part in the exercise.
    • Aim of Surya Kiran 13 : To conduct battalion level joint training with emphasis on counter terrorism operations in mountainous terrain.
National Current Affairs
  • The 4th International Yoga Day celebrations will be held at Dehradun (Uttrakhand) on 21st June 2018.
  • The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has decided to minimise the use of paper and bring all government offices under the e-Office system by 15th August 2018. 
    • Note : The e-Office is a software developed by the National Informatics Centre to help in faster clearance of files and ensure a paper-less office. 
  • The government has directed Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to recognise diplomas and degrees acquired through open and distance learning from UGC-recognised universities for employment purposes
  • Neem and black buck have been declared as the state tree and state animal respectively of Andhra Pradesh.
    • Rose-ringed parakeet will be the state bird while Jasmine is the state flower.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • With a record profit of ₹21,346 crore in 2017-18, the Indian Oil Corporation has emerged as India's most profitable state-owned company for the second consecutive year. 
    • With the profit of ₹19,945 crore, ONGC became the 2nd most profitable state owned company.
  • Global credit rating agency Moody's has cut India's GDP growth estimate to 7.3% for the calendar year 2018, down from its previous forecast of 7.5%.
  • Singapore Airlines has confirmed it is going to launch the world's longest non-stop commercial flight in October, covering about 16,700 km between Singapore and Newark (New Jersey) in 18 hours 45 minutes.
  • The Kerala government today decided to cut the excise duty on fuel to effect a ₹1 per litre reduction in petrol and diesel prices, starting June 1.
    • With this, Kerala has become the first state to slash taxes on fuel after the recent price rally. 
    • This is expected to cause a revenue loss of ₹500 crore annually to the state government.

  • Vice President, M. Venkaiah Naidu today released a book titled ‘Straight Talk’.
    • This book has been authored by Abhishek Manu Singhvi (Member of Rajya Sabha)
    • 'Straight Talk' is a compilation of articles written by Mr. Singhvi, over the last five years, on a host of issues.
Science & Technology
  • Yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali has launched a new messaging application titled 'Kimbho', claiming that it will give "competition" to WhatsApp. 
    • Note : Yesterday, Ramdev launched 'Swadeshi Samriddhi' SIM cards in partnership with state-owned telecom operator BSNL.
  • The National Commission for Women has partnered with American online social media and social networking service company Facebook to launch a digital literacy programme to train 60,000 women in universities across India on safe use of the internet. 
  • An upgraded version of the indigenous Pinaka rocket was successfully test-fired from Proof & Experimental Establishment in Odisha's Chandipur today. 
    • While the earlier version of the rocket was unguided, the new rocket includes a guidance, navigation, and control kit.
New Appointments
  • Paraguay's Vice President Alicia Pucheta has been appointed as thew Interim President of the country. 
    • With this, Alicia became 1st Woman President of Paraguay.
    • She replaces outgoing leader Horacio Cartes, who stepped down ahead of schedule. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani for the historic one-off Test between India and Afghanistan
    • Note : Afghanistan's first-ever Test match will begin on June 14 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
  • Raider Monu Goyat became the costliest player in Pro Kabaddi League history as Haryana Steelers acquired his services for ₹1.51 crore on Day 1 of PKL 2018 auction. 
    • Rahul Chaudhari went to Telugu Titans for ₹1.29 crore, becoming the second costliest athlete. 
  • Top Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda retired after competing at the highest level for more than 15 years.
    • Important Note : He is the first and only Indian male to win Commonwealth Games medal in the discipline.
