International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th May) is Menstrual hygiene day.
    • This is an annual awareness day which aims to break taboos and raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for women and adolescent girls worldwide.
    • Theme of Menstrual hygiene day 2018 “#NoMoreLimits”
  • Colombia will next week formally join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
    • With this the country becomes the only Latin American nation in the alliance.
  • The 1st edition of Global Wind Summit will be held in Hamburg, Germany from 25th to 28th September 2018.
    •  It will be largest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide. 
    • The summit will see participation of of speakers from about 100 countries, including India, China, the US, Spain and Denmark.
    • It will will provide platform for experts from across globe to discuss innovative and green technologies for harnessing wind energy making.
National Current Affairs
  • Tamil Nadu CM E K Palaniswami today passed an order to permanently shut down Vedanta's Sterlite copper plant in Tuticorin after at least 13 people were killed in police fire during protests against the plant. 
    • Protestors alleged that the plant was polluting groundwater and causing health problems for locals. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India today launched its second IT corridor in China in the southwestern city of Guiyang which will focus on Big Data. 
    • Agreements worth ₹38 crore were signed at the launch of the corridor by Guiyang Municipal Government and India's NASSCOM. 
    • Note : India's first IT corridor in China was established in the port city of Dalian last December.
People in News
  • Sangeeta Bahl, a 53-year-old former model, has become the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest
    • Bahl, who currently resides in Gurugram, scaled the peak on May 19 with the help of two Sherpas and was felicitated at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
    •  Note : She has already conquered six out of the seven highest peaks in the world.
Awards & Honors
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recognised Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kerala as the world’s first fully solar energy-powered airport
    • Note : CIAL is India’s first airport to be constructed in Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in 1999. 
    • It is the busiest and largest airport in the state of Kerala.
Deaths
  • Civil rights attorney Lewis Myers Jr (70)., who worked on a key lawsuit against racial discrimination in Mississippi’s higher education system has passed away. 
New Appointments
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Chartered Accountant Sudha Balakrishnan as its first-ever Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
    • Balakrishnan was a Vice President with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), India's first and largest depository. 
    • Note : She will be the 12th executive director of RBI and has come on board for a term of three years.
  • Former Pakistan Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk was appointed as the interim Prime Minister of the country until the general elections are held on July 25. 
  • Lebanon’s Saad Hariri has won a new term as Prime Minister after he won the backing of the majority of parliamentarians. 
    • It will be 3rd term for Hariri, who has held the position since December 2016 and was also Prime Minister between 2009 and 2011.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)  and UN Environment have signed an agreement to promote ‘green' Cricket in India.
    • This partnership aims to spread greater awareness about key environmental challenges facing the country, and highlight alternate and more sustainable solutions. 
  • Tata Trusts has signed MoU with Indian Government to provide development support in eight worst Naxal-affected districts in Chhattisgarh
    • Note : These eight worst Naxal-affected districts are covered under Transformation of aspirational districts Programme of NITI Aayog.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has won Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad.
    • With this, Chennai Super Kings equaled Mumbai Indians’ record for winning the most number of Indian Premier League titles (3).
  • Australian Formula One racer Daniel Ricciardo handed Red Bull a victory in their 250th race in the Formula One at Monaco Grand Prix.
