  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to leave for Sochi tomorrow for an informal summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
    • The two leaders are expected to discuss several issues ranging from international terrorism to Iran nuclear deal.
  • The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held extraordinary summit in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss recent Israeli violence against Palestinian protesters in Gaza Strip. 
    • The summit was convened at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
    • It condemned massacre of Peaceful Palestinian civilian protestors by the Israeli forces as well as on the official opening of US Embassy in Jerusalem in defiance of international law, UN Security Council (UNSC) and General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution.

National Current Affairs
  • The Tripura government has decided to introduce 10% reservation for women at all levels in the police department
    • Note : The state government also made written test mandatory for recruitment to ensure transparency.
  • The government is planning to open up restricted areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim for foreign tourists, Tourism Minister KJ Alphons has announced today. 
    • Note : Currently, foreign tourists have access to these areas through Protected Areas Permit and Restricted Areas Permit.
  • State run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has distributed over 30 crore light emitting diode (LED) bulbs across country under zero-subsidy Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme
    • The distribution of 30 crore LED bulbs has led to energy savings of over 38,952 million kWh, annually, amounting to energy savings of Rs. 15,581 crore.

  • Markets regulator SEBI has announced that it is going to consider penal action against Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Mehul Choksi's Gitanjali Gems after the completion of its investigation into suspected disclosure and trading related issues.
    • Note : SEBI last week issued a warning letter to PNB for delaying disclosures about the fraudulent transactions allegedly carried out by Gitanjali Group and Nirav Modi group.

  • JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy is going to sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 23rd May. 
    • This comes after BS Yeddyurappa resigned as Karnataka CM ahead of the Supreme Court-mandated floor test.
  • 1985 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, Amit Khare, will be the new Information and Broadcasting Secretary.
    • He will replace NK Sinha who will superannuate on 31st of this month.
  • The Government has also appointed Neelam Sawhney as Social Justice and Empowerment Secretary.
  • Rina Ray has been appointed as Secretary Department of School Education and Literacy.
    • She will replace Anil Swarup who will superannuate on 30th of next month.
  • Deepak Khandekar will be the new Tribal Affairs Secretary.
  • Sailesh will be the Secretary, Department of Official language.
  • 1985 batch Gujarat cadre officer Atanu Chakraborty will be Secretary Department of Investment and Public Asset Management
  • Heera Lal Samariya will be Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.
  • The President of Badminton Association of India (BAI), Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the Vice-President of Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC).
  • Anil Kumar Jha has been appointed as full time Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Coal India Limited (CIL). 
    • He replaces Coal Ministry’s Additional Secretary Suresh Kumar, who had recently assumed additional charge of CMD of CIL.

  • Russia unveiled world’s first floating nuclear power station at  port city of Murmansk
    • It will be loaded with nuclear fuel at Murmansk and will be towed to port of Pevek in autonomous Chukotka region in Russia’s far northeast in Arctic Circle region.
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur has set up India’s first Centre for Energy Regulation (CER) with the help of Government of United Kingdom. 
    • The first of its kind centre in India aims at providing independent advisory on policy and regulatory matters in the power and energy sector.

  • South Korea's fourth-largest conglomerate LG Group Chairman Koo Bon-moo (73) passed away.
    • The group's holding company LG Corp has nominated his son Koo Kwang-mo to the board in preparation for a leadership succession.

  • Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Shoplifters' has won the Palme d'Or, the top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

  • Chelsea Football Club defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the 2017/18 FA Cup  (also known as the FA Challenge Cup)  final to win the title for the eighth time. 
  • Italy's legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon ended his career at Juventus with a win and his ninth Series A title with the club, after playing 17 years and keeping goal for the Turin club in 656 matches across all competitions.
