- This day was proclaimed to be on 17 May by United Nations General Assembly resolution, following the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis.

- Japan today has enacted a new law to promote the participation of women in politics.
- The law urges political parties to field equal number of male and female candidates in national and local elections and set targets for gender parity.
- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte today ordered to lift the ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Kuwait.
- The ban was imposed after several incidents of abuse of Filipino workers and a murder of a Filipine domestic worker came to light.
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) has published its 1st 'essential diagnostics list', a catalogue of tests needed to diagnose the most common conditions as well as a number of global priority diseases.
- The step was taken to address the problem of people's inability to access diagnostic services, thus failing to receive the correct treatment.

- According to the Centre's Swachh Survekshan 2018, Indore has been named the cleanest city in India.
- The Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of a Central University in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
- A provision of Rs. 450 crore has been approved for the first phase of establishing the university.
- Important Note : Andhra Pradesh had been left with no central university following its division into two states (AP & Telangana) in 2014.
- According to Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), the subscriber base of Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has crossed 1 crore subscribers mark since its launch in May 2015.
- Till date, the scheme has collected Rs. 3,950 crore of contribution from subscribers.
- It has generated around 9.10% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) since inception till March 2018.

- The Union Cabinet has approved an initial corpus of 5000 crore rupees for Micro Irrigation Fund (MIF) with NABARD under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana.
- The shares of Syndicate Bank fell as much as 12.35% to a 9-year low after the bank posted its biggest quarterly loss of Rs. 2,195.12 crore for March quarter.
- Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad’s (IIMA’s) Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) has launched $25 million ‘Bharat Inclusion Initiative’ to fund start-ups.
- CIIE was founded at IIMA to support entrepreneurs and turn business ideas into viable businesses models.
- It partners with industry experts, mentors, corporates, IIMA community and investors to help incubate early-stage start-ups.

- The Union Cabinet has approved the following Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) :
- MOU for cooperation in the legal field between India and Morocco.
- This MoU will give an opportunity to the Lawyers, Law Officers and law students to discuss issues in the field of law and justice in seminars, symposiums and workshops arranged by authorities of both the countries.
- MoU between India and Swaziland on cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine.
- MoU between India and Suriname on cooperation in the field of electoral management and administration including exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of organizational and technical development of electoral process.
- MoU between India and Equatorial Guinea for cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine.
- MoU between India and Colombia on establishing cooperation on Traditional Systems of Medicine of India
- The NTPC Limited has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bihar Government to improve performance of power sector in the state.
- The MoU envisages transfer of three power generation facilities (Barauni Thermal Power Station, Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Limited (KBUN) and Nabinagar Power Generating Company (Pvt.) Limited (NPGC))in Bihar to NTPC.

- China today launched its 1st privately developed rocket titled 'Chongqing Liangjiang Star'.
- The launch of the rocket developed by 'OneSpace Technology' marks the first time a non-state Chinese rocket has successfully entered the orbit.
- The rocket can place a 100-kilogram load into orbit 800 kilometres from the earth, according to state media.
- Facebook has introduced a feature called 'Voice Posts' in India which allows users to share voice messages on its platform.
