International Current Affairs
  • Today (18th May) is International Museum Day.
    • This day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society.
    • Theme of International Museum Day 2018 : "Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics". 
  • Indonesia has agreed to give India strategic and military access to its Sabang seaport.
    • In turn, India will invest in the port's development and build a hospital on the island.

National Current Affairs

  • The Supreme Court today approved the Centre's draft scheme to distribute the Cauvery river water among the four shareholder parties, directing that it be implemented before monsoon this year. 
    • Earlier, the apex court had slammed the Centre for delay in formulating the scheme, stating that it was in "sheer contempt" of its February verdict in the case.
  • According to a recently released UN report, Delhi will surpass Tokyo as the most populous city in the world by the year 2028.
    • By then, India is also estimated to replace China and become the world's most populous country, the report added. 

Awards & Honors

  • US-based Kathak dancer Anindita Anaam was honoured with the prestigious ‘Shri Jayadev Rashtriya Yuva Pratibha Puraskar 2018′ for outstanding contribution to the field of art. 
    • The award was presented to the Kathak exponent during the ‘Jayadev International Dance Festival’ in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • Late actress Sridevi was honoured posthumously for her contribution to Indian cinema at the Titan Reginald F Lewis Film Honours, held as part of Cannes Film Festival. 
    • Filmmaker Subhash Ghai received the award on behalf of her family. 
  • Veteran British journalist and former BBC India correspondent Sir William Mark Tully has been chosen for 2018 RedInk award for lifetime achievement in Journalism.

Science & Technology

  • On this day (18th May) in the year 1974, India conducted its first nuclear test at Pokhran under the leadership of then PM Indira Gandhi. 
    • Throughout the project's development, the device was called "Peaceful Nuclear Explosive". 
    • As the test's date coincided with Buddhist festival of Buddha Purnima, the PM's office called it with a code phrase "Buddha is smiling" after a successful detonation.
  • US drug regulator has approved the sale of the first-ever medicine that prevents migraine, a debilitating headache which can last from hours to days, affecting nearly 15% people worldwide. 
    • Developed by pharmaceutical firms Novartis and Amgen, the medicine would be sold in the US at $575 for a monthly self-administered injection, while no sale plans for Indian markets were announced.

New Appointments

  • Artist and sculptor Uttam Pacharne was appointed the Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi today.
    • He is the recipient of National Lalit Kala Award 1985, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraska 1985 from Government of Maharashtra, Junior National Award 1986 and Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar 2017 from Prafulla Dahanukar Foundation.
  • Online restaurant discovery and food-delivery platform Zomato has appointed Sameer Maheshwary as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). 
    • Maheshwary will be joining the Gurugram-based startup in July from GE India, where he currently serves as the CFO.  
  • Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's eldest son Lachlan Murdoch will become Chairman and CEO of the proposed new "Fox" company once its deal with Disney is approved by shareholders and regulators. 
    • Rupert Murdoch will serve as Co-Chairman of the new Fox entity.
    • Note : 21st Century Fox's agreed to sell its film and TV assets to Walt Disney Company in a $52.4-billion deal. 
  • Indian American Susheela Jayapal has been elected as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Multnomah County in Oregon.
    • With this, she became the first South Asian to be elected in the western US State.
    • Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi has been appointed as an eminent jurist in the selection committee for appointment of the Lokpal
    • Note : Rohatgi was appointed as Attorney General of India after the Narendra Modi government assumed power in May 2014.

Sports Current Affairs

  • Former Indian cricketer Lalchand Rajput, who was the manager of the winning Indian cricket team for the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, has been named the interim coach of the Zimbabwe cricket team
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC)  is planning to scrap the coin toss in Tests for matches contested as a part of the upcoming Test Championship in order to reduce home ground advantage. 
    • Instead of the coin toss, the visiting captain will be allowed to decide whether to bat or bowl first.
