International Current Affairs
  • Today (15th May) is International Day of Families.
    • The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.
    • This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
    • Theme of International Day of Families 2018 : “Families and inclusive societies
  • The 4th meeting of South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) was held at Kolkata.
    • The two-day conference was attended by representatives of seven out of eight member countries (excluding Pakistan). 
    • 6 proposals, including tracking of wildlife smuggling route, review of existing laws and structure for the organisation were tabled during the meeting.
    • Note : It was first meeting of SAWEN to be held in India since its inception in 2011. 
    • About SAWEN :
    • SAWEN is regional inter-governmental wildlife law enforcement support body of South Asian Countries. 
    • It was launched in January, 2011 in Paro, Bhutan during the second meeting of the South Asia Expert Group on Illegal Wildlife Trade. 
    • Its secretariat is in Kathmandu, Nepal. 
    • Member Countries : Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan.
  • Canada has decided to add a Third gender option to its future government surveys including the 2021 census paving the way for an overhauled census. 
National Current Affairs
  • Nation pays homage to freedom fighter Sukhdev Thapar  (15th May 1907 - 23rd March 1931) on his 111th birth anniversary today.
    • Shaheed Sukhdev was the close associate of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru.
  • The BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa has won by a margin of over 35,000 votes from the Shikaripura seat in the Karnataka Assembly elections
    • He defeated Congress' candidate Goni Malatesha. 
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy.
    • Aim of this Policy : To boost renewable power generation by promoting new projects as well as hybridisation of existing ones. 
    • Government is also going to launch scheme for new hybrid projects under this policy.
  • The Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) run by an all-woman team began its operations Phagwara, Punjab. 
    • This kendra was 192nd POPSK in the country and first one to be operated by an all-woman team
Science & Technology
  • China aims to deliver its domestically developed world's largest amphibious aircraft, titled AG600, by the year 2022.
    • The AG600, which can carry 50 people during maritime search-and-rescue missions, has been developed as part of a drive to modernise China's military in a bid to handle territorial disputes in places like the South China Sea.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government today announced that it has initiated action for removal of Allahabad Bank CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian following the CBI's first chargesheet in the $2 billion fraud at PNB detailing her role.
    • Meanwhile, Punjab National Bank (PNB) was asked to remove executive directors Brahmaji Rao and Sanjiv Sharan, who were named in the chargesheet.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked state-owned Allahabad Bank to reduce its exposure to unrated and high-risk advances in view of deteriorating financial health. 
    • The central bank also restricted the lender's access to raise high-cost deposits and creation of non-banking assets. 
  • The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), a top state-run Chinese bank has launched China’s first India-dedicated publicly offered investment fund
    • The fund has been named as Industrial and Commercial Bank Credit Suisse India Market Fund
    • Note : ICBC is the largest in the world with over $3.6 trillion in assets.
New Appointments
  • In a Cabinet reshuffle announced today :
    • Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was allotted the additional charge of the Finance Ministry while Arun Jaitley recovers from a kidney transplant. 
    • Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was handed the I&B Ministry, replacing Smriti Irani who will now handle only the Textile Ministry.
    • Minister of state for drinking water and sanitation SS Ahluwalia has been moved to the ministry of electronics & information technology (MeitY). 
    • Alphons Kannanthanam has been relieved as Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He continues as Minister of State for Tourism. 
  • Sarah Mullally became the first female Bishop of London at a service held at St Paul's Cathedral. 
    • The 56-year-old, who worked with the National Health Service (NHS) for over 35 years, now holds the third most senior position in the Church of England.
Deaths
  • Actress Margot Kidder (69), best known for playing the role of Lois Lane in the Superman film franchise of the 1970s and 1980s, passed away today. 
Awards & Honors
  • The founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak was honoured with the Nikkei Asia Prize in Japan for his contribution to Asia’s development. 
    • Dr Pathak was described as Indian social reformer tackling two of his country’s biggest challenges — poor hygiene and discrimination
Sports Current Affairs
  • Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix.
  • Indian wheelchair cricket team successfully completed its first international tour, winning a three-match series in Bangladesh, after cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar donated nearly ₹4.5 lakh. 
  • Australian Steve Plain became the fastest climber to scale the highest peaks on seven continents, taking 117 days, after he scaled Mount Everest today.
  • Honouring US President Donald Trump, Israeli football club Beitar Jerusalem has added Trump to its name ahead of the inauguration of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
  • The Indian U-16 football team was crowned champions at the Four-Nation Tournament held in Serbia after they defeated Tajikistan 4-2 in the finals. 
    • Note : The four-nation tournament was played between India, Serbia, Tajikistan and Jordan.
