International Current Affairs
  • India was ranked 4th out of 25 nations in Asia-Pacific region in the inaugural Asia Power Index 2018  released by Australian think tank Lowy Institute.
    • Top 10 in the List
      1. United States  
      2. China

      5. Russia
      6. Australia
      7. South Korea
      8. Singapore
      9. Malaysia
      10. Indonesia 
    • Note : Nepal, Laos, Mongolia, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka sat at the bottom end of the ranking.
  • India has sent Bangladesh its second relief consignment under Operation Insaniyat to help tens of thousands of displaced Rohingya Muslims who fled Myanmar into Bangladesh following military crackdown in violence-hit Rakhine state.
  • Pakistan's Parliament has passed the landmark Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act  granting fundamental rights to transgenders and outlawing discrimination against them.
    • The act allows people to self-identify their gender and to have that identity recognised on official documents, including national IDs and passports.
  • Israel and Iran were engaged in their most direct confrontation to date after Iranian forces stationed in Syria fired nearly 20 missiles targeting Israel-occupied territory and Israel Defence Forces responded with airstrikes. 
    • This marks Israel's most significant military action in Syria since the civil war started in 2011.
National Current Affairs
  • The Indian government has approved Green licence plates for Electric Vehicles bearing numbers in white fonts for private cars and yellow font for taxis.
    • The purpose behind distinctive green number plates is easy identification of electric vehicles for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today visited the Siachen glacier base camp in J&K to interact with the soldiers posted there. 
    • With this he became the second President to visit the camp after former President APJ Abdul Kalam (visited it in 2004). 
  • Indian Army’s month long Vijay Prahar exercise concluded in Suratgarh, Rajasthan today. 
    • This exercise was conducted by South Western Command of Indian Army. 
    • Aim of Vijay Prahar Exercise : To orchestrate wide spectrum of threats including  Nuclear, Chemical or Biological (NCB) attack which are planned to be tackled through high tempo joint air and land operation.
  • The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) has launched the website of Digital India Internship Scheme
    • The portal will facilitate students to apply online for internship. 
    • Under this scheme, 25 interns will be inducted for period of three months with the stipend of Rs. 10, 000 per month.
  • Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. (BSCDCL) has launched India’s first cloud-based Common Integrated Data Centre, Disaster Recovery Centre and Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) in Madhya Pradesh. 
    • It is powered by Hewlett Packard (HP) Enterprise’s Universal Internet of Things (IoT) Platform.
    • ICCC will enable Madhya Pradesh State administration to monitor and administer multiple city civic utilities and citizen services across seven smart cities in state through central cloud. 
    • These seven cities include Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore, Ujjain, Satna, and Sagar.
  • The 1st edition of this year’s bi-annual Naval Commanders’ Conference is being held in New Delhi.
    • This conference discussed aspects concerning India’s maritime security, analyse mission-based deployments and larger issues of geo-strategic Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a region witnessing increasing Chinese presence. 
Recent Committees in News
  • The 15th Finance Commission (FCC) headed by NK Singh has constituted Advisory Council to advise and assist Commission on issue or subject related to Terms of Reference (ToR) to quell strong opposition from some states over 2011 census. 
    • The council comprises the following members :
      • Arvind Virmani (former chief economic advisor)
      • Surjit S Bhalla
      • Sajjid Chinoy
      • Neelkanth Mishra 
      • Sanjeev Gupta, 
      • Pinaki Chakraborty.
  • Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu appointed a 2 member Committee to revise the rules and procedure of conduct of business in the upper House of Parliament.
    • Head of this Committee : V.K. Agnihotri (former Rajya Sabha Secretary General) 
    • Member : S.R. Dhaleta (former Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Law and Justice) 
MoUs and Agreements
  • India and Panama have signed two agreements. They are :
    • Agreement on exemption of Visas for holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports 
    • Agreement on strengthening cooperation in the field of agriculture.
    • These agreements were signed in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and President of Panama Juan Carlos Varela Rodrigues in Panama city.
  • India and Guatemala have signed an agreement for strengthening diplomatic cooperation through Respective Foreign Service Institutes in educational field
    • The agreement was signed after meeting between Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and his Guatemala counterpart, Jafeth Cabrera Franco in Guatemala City. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Following the deal with US-based retail giant Walmart, Flipkart Co-founder Sachin Bansal will be leaving the Indian e-commerce startup and will sell his entire 5.5% stake to Walmart for a reported amount of $1 billion. 
    • However, Co-founder Binny Bansal will still hold a stake in the 11-year-old homegrown startup, which is now expected to be valued at $20.8 billion.
  • According to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s installed clean (renewable) energy capacity has already touched 70 Gigawatts (GW) and 38 GW is under implementation. 
    • This shows that India is progressing fast in areas of renewable energy and it is committed to meeting target of having 175 GW renewable energy (100GW Solar, 60 GW Wind, 10 GW Biomass and 5 GW Hydro) by the year 2022.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its Asia and Pacific Regional Economic Outlook report has reaffirmed that India will be the fastest growing major economy in 2018, with growth rate of 7.4% and 7.8% in 2019.

      • 1st - Xi Jinping (Chinese President)

    • Note : Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and MD of India's second-largest company Reliance Industries, has been ranked 32nd in the list. 
      • He is the only other Indian to feature on the list after Narendra Modi.
