International Current Affairs
  • Today (4th April) is United Nations' Mine Awareness Day (International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action).
    • Theme of the year 2018 : "Advancing Protection, Peace and Development"
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is on a 3-day visit to Azerbaijan.
    • During this visit she will hold talks with top leadership of the country and attend a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on a visit to Russia to attend the 7th Moscow Conference on International Security.
    • Note : This is her first visit to Russia in her capacity as the Defence Minister.
National Current Affairs
  • 10th edition of DefExpo18 to be held in Chennai from 11-14 April.
    • Theme of the Expo : ''India: The Emerging Manufacturing Hub''.
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the beta version of its Virtual ID service to mask the unique 12-digit Aadhaar number with a randomly generated 16-digit Virtual ID. 
    • Users will have the option to share their Virtual IDs instead of their Aadhaar numbers with service providers for the purpose of authentication. 
  • To help users quit smoking, all tobacco products and cigarette packs will have the national toll-free number 1800-11-2356 printed on them starting September 1.
    • Further, enhanced pictorial images and the text messages "tobacco causes painful death" and "tobacco causes cancer" will cover 85% of the packet area.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the Protection of Human Rights (Amendments) Bill, 2018 for better protection and promotion of human rights in the country.
    • Highlights of this bill
      • To include “National Commission for Protection of Child Rights” as deemed Member of the Commission;
      • To add a woman Member in the composition of the Commission;
      • To incorporate a mechanism to look after the cases of human rights violation in the Union Territories.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  •  Leading private lender ICICI Bank announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind service titled 'Social Pay;.
    • Social Pay enables Non Resident Indians (NRIs) to send money to a beneficiary in India using social media platforms like WhatsApp and e-mail. 
  • The trial run of the 1st container train to run between India and Bangladesh was flagged off today. 
    • It would make customs procedures easier and deliver consignments before sunse.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Oli jointly laid foundation stone of the 900 MW Arun III hydropower project to be built in Nepal's eastern part. 
    • India will provide around ₹9,700 crore for the power project expected to be completed within five years. 
    • Note : This is the largest hydropower project undertaken by Indian government in Nepal.

  • Bollywood Actor Anupam Kher has received a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 2018 BAFTA TV Awards.
    • He has been nominated for his performance in the show 'The Boy with the Topknot'.
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has successfully conducted Advanced Supersonic Parachute Inflation Research Experiment (ASPIRE) to test supersonic parachute that will help its space exploration missions to land on Mars. 
    • The parachute was launched aboard of sounding rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in US. 
    • It was tested in sky, mimicking conditions of entering red planet.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Prince Charles inaugurated the 2018 Commonwealth Games today at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. 
    • Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu led the over 200-member strong Indian contingent at the Parade of Nations during the opening ceremony.
    • Over 4,500 athletes from 71 countries and territories will compete for 275 gold medals at the Games. 
    • Note : India had finished fifth at 2014 Commonwealth Games with 15 gold medals.
