Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Unity in defeat: SP-BSP ties after Rajya Sabha polls"
  • Far from - used for saying that the real situation is the opposite of what you mention
  • Apart - separated by a distance or by time
  • Predictable - if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
  • Intrigue - to plan secretly, especially in order to harm or cheat someone
  • Betrayal - the act of not being loyal to your country or a person, often by doing something harmful such as helping their enemies
  • Biennial - a biennial event happens once every two years
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Cross-voting - (especially in a parliament) voting for a party one does not belong to
  • Loyalty - support that you always give to someone or something because of your feelings of duty and love towards them
  • Rebellion - an attempt to remove a government or leader by force
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Distrust - to not trust someone or something
  • Jeopardise - to risk damaging or destroying something important
  • Nascent - beginning or formed recently
  • Proximity - how near something is to another thing, especially in distance or time
  • Consequence - a result or effect of something
  • Drive a wedge between - to cause two people or groups to disagree or be unfriendly to one another, especially in order to gain an advantage for yourself
  • Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Disenchanted - disappointed and no longer enthusiastic about someone or something
  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Fierce - very angry, or ready to attack
  • Alter - to make something or someone different

  • Emergency - an unexpected situation involving danger in which immediate action is necessary
  • Diplomacy -  the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Expiry - the end of a period of time during which an agreement, offer, or official document exists or can be used
  • Self-imposed - self-imposed rules, punishments etc are ones that you have chosen for yourself
  • Cold comfort - something that makes a difficult situation slightly better but not much better
  • Concerned - worried about something
  • Democracy - the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief
  • Exile - someone who has been forced to live in a foreign country because they cannot live in their own country, usually for political reasons
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Sentencing -  the system for punishing people who have been found guilty in a court of law
  • Activist - someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve political or social change, especially someone who is a member of an organization
  • Overturn - to say officially that something such as a decision or law is wrong and change it
  • Coercion - the use of force or threats to make someone do something
  • The status quo ante - the situation that existed before
  • Pushback - resistance to a change that has been introduced
  • Stark - used for describing an unpleasant fact or situation that is very obvious or impossible to avoid
  • Contrast - a noticeable difference between people or things
  • Desire - a strong feeling of wanting to have or to do something
  • Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Insulate - to protect someone / something
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Broker - to arrange something such as a deal, agreement, etc. between two or more groups or countries
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Steer - to influence the way that something happens or the way that people behave
