International Current Affairs
- French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in New Delhi today on a 4-day India visit.
- Aim of this Visit : To boost bilateral cooperation in defence and clean energy sector.
- In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court today gave legal sanction to Passive Euthanasia, permitting 'living will' by patients on withdrawing medical support if they slip into irreversible coma.
- What is Passive euthanasia ?
- Passive euthanasia is a condition where there is withdrawal of medical treatment with the deliberate intention to hasten the death of a terminally-ill patient.
- On the International Women's Day (8th March 2018), the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Kosh' scheme aimed at providing pension to unmarried women aged over 50 years.
- Note : Earlier this week, Chouhan announced ₹4,000 monthly assistance to pregnant labourers from the sixth month of pregnancy.
- To ensure safety of women at public places, the South Delhi Police launched a 16 membered all-women patrolling squad named 'Knightingales'.
- The squad has been given training in unarmed combat, weapon handling, and driving.
- The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has launched Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) on the occasion of International Women’s day (March 8, 2018).
- Aim of WEP : To build an ecosystem for women across India to realise their entrepreneurial aspirations, scale-up innovative initiatives and chalk-out sustainable, long-term strategies for their businesses.
- Note : WEP’s theme song ‘Naari Shakti’ composed and sung by renowned singer Kailash Kher was also released.
- The Ministry of Micro,Small & Medium Enterprises launched Udyam Sakhi Portal (www.udyamsakhi.org) for women entrepreneurs on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
- The portal is a network for nurturing entrepreneurship and creating business models for low cost products and services in order to empower women and make them self-reliant and self-sufficient.
Science & Technology
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is inviting people around the world to submit their names online to be placed on a microchip aboard its Parker Solar Probe mission, scheduled to launch in July this year.
- The "Hot Ticket" offers people to "be a part of the first mission to touch the Sun", announced NASA, who would be accepting applications until April 27, 2018.
Awards & Honors
- European researchers Bart De Strooper, Michel Goedert, Christian Haass, and John Hardy have been jointly awarded the Brain Prize "for their groundbreaking research on the genetic and molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease".
- The €1-million (over ₹8 crore) prize, awarded annually by The Lundbeck Foundation in Denmark.
- Note : Brain Prize is considered the world's most prestigious award in the field of neuroscience.
- President Ram Nath Kovind presented Nari Shakti Puraskars 2017 to 30 eminent individuals and 9 distinguished institutions at special ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan on occasion of International Women’s Day.
- Nari Shakti Puraskar is highest civilian honour for women.
- Awardees receive certificate, cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Punjab National Bank (PNB) has requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to provide it four quarters for making provisions against the $2-billion fraud by jewellers Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
- Note : The CBI today filed a fresh FIR against Nirav for causing a loss of ₹321.88 crore to PNB.
Deaths
- Sufi singer Ustad Pyarelal Wadali (75), who was one of the singers of the Wadali Brothers group, passed away.
- Known for their Punjabi Sufi music, the Wadali Brothers also sang Bollywood songs like 'Rangrez' from 'Tanu Weds Manu' and 'Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi' from 'Mausam'.
New Appointments
- The chief of Tripura BJP, Biplab Deb today sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Tripura.
- Micro blogging website Twitter has appointed IIT Bombay alumnus Parag Agrawal as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
- The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) today appointed Catherine De Bolle as its first woman Executive Director.
- Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has assigned the Finance, Personnel, Cabinet Affairs, and Planning portfolios among others to himself.
- Britain's Prince Charles today appointed Indian-origin steel tycoon Sanjeev Gupta as an Official ambassador for the Industrial Cadets programme.
- This programme helps young people aged 9-21 to develop skills and gain an insight into the manufacturing industry.
