Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Friends: on BJP and its disgruntled allies"
  • Disgruntled - unhappy, annoyed, and disappointed about something
  • Ally - someone who helps and supports someone else
  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • Survival - the fact of a person, organization, etc. continuing to live or exist
  • Electoral - relating to an election
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Belligerent - wishing to fight or argue
  • Demonstrate - to show or make make something clear
  • Rival - a person, group, etc. competing with others for the same thing or in the same area
  • Emerge - to become known
  • Player - someone who is very involved in an activity or organization
  • Notwithstanding - despite the fact or thing mentioned
  • Circumstance - a fact or event that makes a situation the way it is
  • Reluctant - not willing to do something and therefore slow to do it
  • Ramp up - a large increase in activity or in the level of something
  • Defensive - used to protect someone or something against attack
  • Thanks to somebody / something - because of someone or something
  • By-elections - an election that happens at a different time from a main election, to choose a Member of Parliament to replace one who has died or left his or her job
  • Disaffection - the state of no longer feeling loyal towards a group or organization
  • Confrontation - a fight or argument
  • Hostile - unfriendly and not liking something
  • Constituency - one of the official areas of a country that elects someone to represent it in a parliament or legislature
  • Contradiction - a difference in two or more statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both or all of them to be true
  • Perennial - lasting a very long time, or happening repeatedly or all the time
  • Strain - pressure caused by a difficult situation
  • Former - the first of two people, things, or groups previously mentioned
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Chafing - to be or become annoyed or lose patience because of rules or limits
  • Step-motherly - relating to the woman who is married to someone's father but who is not their real mother
  • Inasmuch as - used to introduce a phrase that explains why or how much something described in another part of the sentence is true
  • Best bet - your best bet is the action that is most likely to be successful
  • Coalition - the joining together of different political parties or groups for a particular purpose, usually for a limited time, or a government that is formed in this way

  • Enthusiasm - a feeling of energetic interest in a particular subject or activity and an eagerness to be involved in it
  • Doping - the act of giving a person or animal drugs in order to make them perform better or worse in a competition
  • Scandal - (an action or event that causes) a public feeling of shock and strong moral disapproval
  • Cast a shadow over/on something - to spoil a good situation with something unpleasant
  • Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Confederation - an organization consisting of different groups of people working together for business or political reasons
  • Manipulation - controlling someone or something to your own advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly
  • Vet - to examine something or someone carefully to make certain that they are acceptable or suitable
  • Contingent - a group of people representing a place, organization etc at a meeting or event
  • Anthem - a song that has special importance for a particular group of people, an organization, or a country, often sung on a special occasion
  • Ceremony - a formal public event with special traditions, actions, or words
  • Comply with - to obey a rule or law, or to do what someone asks you to do
  • Outrage - a feeling of anger and shock
  • Arbitration - the process of solving an argument between people by helping them to agree to an acceptable solution
  • Overturn - to say officially that something such as a decision or law is wrong and change it
  • Impact - a powerful effect that something, especially something new, has on a situation or person
  • Fortnight - a period of two weeks
  • Bonhomie - friendliness and happiness
  • Neighbour - a country that is next to another country:
  • Escalate - to become or make something become greater or more serious
  • Immaterial - not important, or not relating to the subject you are thinking about
  • Delegate - a person chosen or elected by a group to speak, vote, etc. for them, especially at a meeting
  • Cheerleader - a person, usually a woman or girl in an organized group, who leads the crowd in shouting encouragement and supporting a team at a sports event
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Probably - likely to be true or likely to happen
  • Torch-bearer - a person who carries a ceremonial torch
  • Swansong - a person's last piece of work, achievement, or performance
