  • Resolution - a formal proposal that is considered by an organization and is usually voted on at a meeting
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Adopt - to decide to start using a particular idea, plan, or method
  • Privileged - having advantages and opportunities that other people do not have
  • Compelling - interesting or exciting enough to keep your attention completely
  • Backed - supported
  • Survival - the fact or state of continuing to live or exist, especially in difficult conditions
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Contender - someone who competes with other people for a prize or job
  • Mobilisation - to organize or prepare something, such as a group of people, for a purpose
  • Fare - used for saying how well or how badly someone does something
  • Diverse - very different from each other
  • Overwhelming - much larger, stronger, more important etc than anything else in a situation
  • In accordance with - in a way that follows a rule, system, or someone’s wishes
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Constrained - behaving in a way that is very controlled and not natural

  • Shutdown - a closure of a factory or system, typically a temporary closure due to a fault or for maintenance
  • Republican -  someone who believes that Northern Ireland should join with the Republic of Ireland to form a single country and should no longer be part of the UK
  • Democrat - someone who supports democracy as a political system
  • Federal - a federal country or system is one in which individual states make their own laws, but a national government is responsible for areas such as defence and foreign policy
  • Furlough - a period of time during which someone is allowed to be away from a job or the armed forces
  • Revenue - income from business activities or taxes
  • Macroeconomic - relating to the economic system of a whole country or large region
  • Productivity - the rate at which goods are produced, especially in relation to the time, money, and workers needed to produce them

  • Inescapable - impossible to avoid or ignore
  • Congressional - relating to the US Congress
  • Dysfunction - a failure to work well
  • Stemming from - to be caused by something
  • Partisan - showing strong and usually unfair support for one particular person, group, or idea
  • Politicking - political activity by someone who is only interested in doing things for their own advantage, not in helping other people
  • Looming - if something unpleasant or difficult looms, it seems likely to happen soon
  • Hardline - strict
  • Immigration - the process in which people enter a country in order to live there permanently
  • Clemency - a decision not to punish someone severely, made by someone in a position of authority
  • Revoke - to officially say that something is no longer legal, for example a law or a document
  • Predecessor - the person who had a job or official position before someone else
  • So-called - used for showing that you think a word used for describing someone or something is not suitable
  • Deportation - to force someone to leave a country, especially someone who has no legal right to be there or who has broken the law
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Rattle - to make someone feel nervous or angry
  • Stopgap - a person or thing that provides a temporary solution
  • Contingent - a group of people representing a place, organization etc at a meeting or event
  • Law-abiding - someone who is law-abiding obeys the law
  • Overshadowing - to be a negative feature or influence that spoils something
  • Anniversary - a date when you celebrate something that happened in a previous year that is important to you
  • Reiterate - to repeat something in order to emphasize it or make it very clear to people
  • Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Obstructionism - the act of intentionally stopping or slowing down an official process
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Regardless - without being affected or influenced by someone or something
  • Transcend - to become free of negative attitudes, thoughts, or feelings that limit what you can achieve
  • Partisan - showing strong and usually unfair support for one particular person, group, or idea
  • Bias - to influence someone’s opinions, decisions etc so that they behave or think in an unfair way
  • Comprehensive - including many details or aspects of something
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
