International Current Affairs
  • Today (20th November) is Universal Children's Day
    • This day was established in the year 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare.
    • Note : November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
    • Theme of Universal Children's Day 2017 : #KidsTakeOver
  • The UNFCCC Climate Change Conference (COP23) was recently held in Bonn, Germany.
    • This conference was presided over by Government of Fiji
    • The conference concluded with countries putting in place a roadmap for ‘Talanoa Dialogue’, a year-long process to assess countries’ progress on climate actions.
    • UNFCCC - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 
    • COP 23 - The twenty-third session of the Conference of the Parties
  • Interim Meeting of Steering Committee of International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centre (SARTTAC) was held in New Delhi.
    • Officials from all Six SARTTAC Member countries attended the meeting together with Development Partner representatives European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, and USAID  along with IMF staff.
National Current Affairs
  • Bollywood Actor Sharukh Khan will inaugurate the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2017 in Goa today.
    • Besides Khan, actors Shahid Kapoor and Katrina Kaif will also attend the annual event.
    • Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Smriti Irani will attend the opening ceremony at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium at Bambolim.
    • The opening ceremony will also include a cultural programme and will be followed by the screening of Beyond the Clouds, a film directed by Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi.
    • The Indo-Argentine film Thinking of Him by filmmaker Pablo Cesar will be the closing movie of IFFI 2017.
    • Amitabh Bachchan will be awarded the Personality of the Year award at the closing ceremony of the event on November 28.
  • The Indian Army's motorcycle display team, Tornadoes, today created a world record as 58 men mounted a single 500 cc Royal Enfield and rode it for 1,200 metres. 
    • The previous record of 56 men was set in 2013 by the Army Signal Corps (Daredevils). 
    • Note : Tornadoes, which was formed in 1982, currently holds 19 world and national records.
  • The first ever Namami Barak festival was held at Silchar in Assam
    • It was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • Ministry of Power launched Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – ‘Saubhagya’ Web Portal. 
    • The web portal aims to ensure transparency as well as accelerate household electrification in rural as well as urban areas in the country.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Defence Ministry has cancelled a $500-million deal aimed at acquiring Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) from Israel, in a bid to promote indigenously developed missiles. 
    • India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will now produce the Man-Portable ATGM within 3-4 years and will not require any transfer of technology.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a next-generation satellite called the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) into space.
    • JPSS-1 is a joint venture between NASA and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has allowed banks to hire private data entry operators and enrolment machines to speed up the opening of Aadhaar enrolment centres at bank premises. 
    • So far, only 3,000 branches have opened Aadhaar centres as against the 15,300 target.
  • To further enhance the scope, coverage and outreach of Scheme, the Union Cabinet has approved increase in carpet area of houses eligible for interest subsidy under Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) for Middle Income Group (MIG) under Pradhan Mantri AwasYojana (Urban).
Deaths
  • Congress leader and former Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi (72) passed away after being in coma for 9 years.
    • Dasmunsi served as the All India Football Federation President for almost 20 years and was the first Indian to serve as a match commissioner in a FIFA World Cup game. 
    • He was paralysed after suffering a stroke in 2008.
New Appointments
  • Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata group firms, has elevated group CFO Saurabh Agrawal and MD of Titan Bhaskar Bhat to the company's board. 
Awards & Honors
  • Actor-playwright Girish Karnad has been conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of theatre at the Tata Literature Live in Mumbai today.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov defeated Belgium’s David Goffin to win his maiden ATP World Tour Finals
    • Dimitrov became the first player to win the season-ending tournament on debut since 1998. 
  • Indian captain Virat Kohli became the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to score 50 international centuries, registering his 18th Test ton against Sri Lanka in the first Test today.
  • Former All England Open winner and coach Pullela Gopichand's 14-year-old daughter Gayatri Gopichand won the Under-19 singles event at the 26th Smt Krishna Khaitan All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held in Chandigarh.
