International Current Affairs
  • Today (16th November) is International Day for Tolerance.
    • This day is an annual observance declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance.
    • The aim of this day is to enhance the awareness about dangers of intolerance and its implications in maintaining the peace among people.
    • Theme of 2017 : Together
  • Today (3rd Thursday of November) UNESCO World Philosophy Day.
    • By celebrating World Philosophy Day each year, the UNESCO underlines the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.
  • Canada has been named the '2017 Destination of the Year' by the Travel + Leisure magazine.
  • The 15th Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) Conference was held in New Delhi
    • It is first ever conference to be held in India and South Asia.
    • Theme of APCERT conference 2017 : “Building Trust in the Digital Economy”.
  • The 10th South Asia Economic Summit (SAES-2017) was held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
    • The 3-day summit was organised by National Planning Commission and Ministry of Commerce of Nepal and South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment, Nepal.
    • Theme of SAES 2017 : “Deepening Economic Integration for Inclusive and Sustainable Development in South Asia”.
National Current Affairs
  • National Press Day is being observed today. 
    • This day is observed on 16th November to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India. 
    • Formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press and also ensures that journalistic objectivity is not compromised due to "influence or threats of any extraneous factors."
  • India’s first Tribal Entrepreneurship Summit was held at Dantewada in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.
    • The summit is part of 8th Global Entrepreneurship Summit being held in India.
  • Delhi has been rated the most tourist-friendly destination in India, according to a biennial survey conducted by the World Travel and Tourism Council India Initiative.

  • The Department of Posts has begun the pilot phase of the eLoc (e-location) project, aimed at allotting a six-character alphanumeric digital address to all residential and official addresses in the country. 
    • The initiative, which will create an e-directory like the Google Maps, aspires to link the digital addresses to other information including property ownership and property tax records.
  • The Governments of Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal conducted joint security exercise named ‘Sagar Kavach’ to further tighten the existing coastal security mechanism along the 630 km long coastline.
  • On Jharkhand's 17th Foundation Day (15th November), President Ram Nath Kovind launched schemes worth over ₹3,400 crore in the state. 
    • The schemes included the ₹636-crore 'Mukhyamantri Health Insurance Scheme', under which 57 lakh families in the state will be benefitted, and a ₹290-crore '108 Ambulance' service. 
    • The President also laid the foundation stones of two flyovers at Harmu and Kantatoli.

  • 21-one-year-old Kevin Lilliana (Indonesia) was crowned Miss International 2017.
    • Curacao's Chanelle De Lau and Venezuela's Diana Croce were the first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. 
  • Actress Zaira Wasim, known for films like 'Dangal' and 'Secret Superstar', was presented with the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement 2017 in the field of Performing Arts by President Ram Nath Kovind. 
  • Karnataka Governor VR Vala presented Hoysala and Keladi Chennamma Bravery Award to 7 children on the occasion of Children's Day for showing extraordinary courage and saving the lives of others.
Science & Technology
  • China launched world’s first fully electric cargo ship in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong province. 
    • It is the first ship in the world to use lithium ion battery. The ship will be mainly used to run in inland section of Pearl River for carrying coal for generation of electric power.
  • The Indian Railways is going to introduce Asia's largest Solid State Interlocking (SSI) system in Kharagpur on Sunday.
    • This Solid State Interlocking system will aid in setting 800 train routes and ruling out collisions caused by cross movements. 
    • The ₹39-crore project will replace the Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system, through which operators were able to set only 423 routes.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Union Cabinet has approved removal of prohibition on export of all types of pulses.
  • The Union Government launched BHARAT-22 Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) managed by ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund targeting an initial amount of about Rs. 8,000 Crore.
  • India has become the home to the largest number of families on the list of Forbes Asia's 50 Richest Families for the third time, taking up 18 spots.
    • India is followed by Hong Kong with nine families on the list. 
  • Real estate tycoon Hui Ka Yan topped the Forbes list of China's 400 richest for the first time with a fortune of $42.5 billion. 
    • He is followed by Tencent's Ma Huateng and Alibaba's Jack Ma.
