Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Steadying hand: On RBI's monetary statement"
  • Monetary - relating to a country’s money and to the systems that a country uses for controlling its money supply
  • Fillip - something that improves a situation
  • Inception - the beginning of something
  • Unwavering - strong and steady despite opposition or other problems
  • Remit - a particular area of work that someone is responsible for
  • Preservation -  the process of working to protect something valuable so that it is not damaged or destroyed
  • Panel - a group of people who make decisions or judgments
  • Opted to do something - to make a choice or decision from a range of possibilities
  • Benchmark - an amount, level, standard etc that you can use for judging how good or bad other things are
  • Neutral - not showing strong feelings or opinions in the way that you speak or behave
  • Stance - an attitude or view about an issue that you state clearly
  • Consumer Price Index -  a measure of inflation (the rate at which the cost of living is rising or falling). It consists of a list of the prices of some basic goods and services, which is published each month.
  • Durable - able to stay in good condition for a long time
  • Spelling out - to say or explain something very clearly
  • Rationale - the set of reasons that something such as a plan or belief is based on
  • Crude oil - oil that is still in its natural state and has not yet been refined for use by chemical processes
  • Firmed up - to become more definite, or to make something more definite
  • Amid -  if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • In the wake of something - happening after an event or as a result of it
  • Accelerating - to happen or make something happen at a faster rate
  • Appreciably - to an appreciable extent; considerably
  • Uncertainty - a nervous feeling that you have because you think bad things might happen
  • Pose - to present a difficult or dangerous situation
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Anticipate -  to think that something will probably happen
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Agitating - to try to cause social or political changes by arguing or protesting, or through other political activity
  • Evident - easy to see, notice, or understand
  • Waiver - an official statement or document that says a right, claim, or law can be officially ignored or given up
  • Exert -  to use influence, authority, or power in order to affect or achieve something
  • Allowance - an amount of something that you are officially allowed by a particular set of rules or by the law
  • Qualitative - concerning the quality of something
  • Uptick - a small increase, especially in the price of something
  • Welter - a large number of unpleasant things
  • Escalation - a rapid increase; a rise
  • Uncertainty - the fact that something is not known or has not been decided
  • Volatility - liability to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse.
  • Unwinding - to begin to relax after you have been working hard or feeling nervous
  • In the face of something - in a situation where you have to deal with something unpleasant or difficult
  • Juxtaposition - to put things that are not similar next to each other
  • Outlook - an idea about what a situation will be like in the future
  • Overwhelming - much larger, stronger, more important etc than anything else in a situation
  • Solitary - in a place or situation where there are no other people
  • Dissent - strong disagreement
  • Forecast - a statement about what is likely to happen, based on available information and usually relating to the weather, business, or the economy
  • Reiterating - to repeat something in order to emphasize it or make it very clear to people
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Reinvigorate - give new energy or strength to
  • Onus - if the onus is on someone to do something, it is their responsibility or duty to do it
  • Squarely - in a clear and definite way
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Pass the baton to someone - to give responsibility to someone

  • Awestruck - feeling extremely impressed by something
  • Coordination - the process of organizing people or things in order to make them work together effectively
  • Black hole - an area in outer space where the force of gravity is so strong that light and everything else around it is pulled into it
  • Cataclysmic - changing a situation in a sudden, violent, and unpleasant way
  • Collide - if people or things collide, they crash into each other
  • Far-off - far away from you or from a particular place
  • Merger - a combination of two things into one
  • Unravel - to understand something complicated by thinking about it for a long time
  • Pertain to something - to be directly related to something
  • Astronomy - the scientific study of the stars, planets, and other objects in the universe
  • Scaling up something - to increase the size, amount, or importance of something, usually an organization or process
  • Marvel - to show or feel surprise or admiration
  • Coherence - the situation when the parts of something fit together in a natural or reasonable way
  • Relativity - the relationship between time, space, and movement as described in Einstein’s ‘Theory of Relativity’
