International Current Affairs
- Today (13th October) is International Day for Disaster Reduction.
- This day celebrates the way that people and communities around the world reduce their exposure to disasters and raise awareness about the risks that they face.
- Theme of International Day for Disaster Reduction 2017 : "Sendai Seven"
- What is Sendai Seven ?
- Sendai Seven campaign was started in 2016.
- It centres on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework, an advocacy initiative to encourage the implementation of key frameworks and systems with the goal of saving lives, reducing disaster losses and improving management of disaster risk.
- Japanese capital city Tokyo has topped The Economist Intelligence Unit's Safe Cities Index 2017, which ranked 60 cities on parameters including personal and health security.
- Singapore and Japanese city Osaka have ranked second and third.
- Indian cities Delhi and Mumbai have ranked 43rd and 45th respectively.
- Pakistani city Karachi has been ranked the least safe city in the list.

- The United States today announced its withdrawal from The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), for the second time in 33 years.
- The US State Department cited the UNESCO's "anti-Israel bias" and a need for its "fundamental reform" as reasons for the withdrawal.
- However, the US will maintain its status as a non-member observer state at UNESCO.
National Current Affairs
- Aiming at providing better connectivity in the countryside, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today launched a fleet of 50 saffron 'Sankalp Seva' buses.
- The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is going to use handheld explosive trace detectors in Airports.
- From now onwards Differently-abled passengers need not remove their prosthetic limbs for X-ray screening at airports in India.
Science & Technology
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is offering people to send in their names aboard the InSight Mars lander, due to be launched in May 2018.
- Indian Naval Ships Satpura and Kadmatt participated in Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Japanese Marine Self Defence Force (JMSDF) held at Sasebo, Japan.
- These ships are participating in the exercise in pursuance of India’s Act East Policy and demonstration of India’s commitment to peace and stability in Indo-Pacific Region.
- The world's first "Negative Emissions" plant that turns carbon dioxide into carbonate rocks has begun operations in Iceland.
- The engineering experiment by Swiss firm Climeworks aims to capture 50 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 over a year, equalling a US household's greenhouse emission.
Sports Current Affairs
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved the trial of four-day Test matches, which will run through until the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
- This comes after South Africa had sought permission to host Zimbabwe in a four-day Test later this year.
- Saudi Arabia's Sports Authority has officially banned Nightwear at sports venues across the country.
- India crashed out of the U-17 FIFA World Cup after losing their last Group A match against two-time U-17 champions Ghana in Delhi today.
- Note : It was the first-ever FIFA tournament that India participated in.
- Indian duo Deborah Herold and Aleena Reji have qualified for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup to be held in Manchester, England from 10th to 12th November.
