International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th September) is World Heart Day.
    • The World Heart Day is an international campaign held on 29th September by the World Heart Foundation to inform people about cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death.
    • This day promotes preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
    • Theme of World Heart Day 2017 : ‘share the power
  • The International Police Organization, Interpol today announced it had admitted Palestine and Solomon Islands as member states.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has signed Letter of Intent (LoI) with Norway to extend cooperation within health sector through Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) for period of three years starting from 2018.
    • Through this LoI, cooperation between both countries will continue to be aligned with development goals of India as outlined in its National Health Policy, 2017 for achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

National Current Affairs
  • The Karnataka government today launched 'Puneeta Yatre', to provide subsidised tour packages for promoting religious tourism in the state. 
    • The scheme offers several tour packages ranging from a day to seven nights trip, including transport and accommodation.
  • The Shri Dharmic Leela Committee, which was established in 1924 and is the oldest Ramlila celebration in Delhi, has turned 94.
    • Performed at Madhavdas Park, it has been attended by Prime Ministers including Narendra Modi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and Presidents including Pranab Mukherjee. 
    • President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu are attending the celebrations this year.
  • The Maharashtra government is going to acquire the decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat and convert it into a Naval Museum.
  • Gujarat will become first big state to use Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) equipped with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in coming Assembly elections to make election process more transparent.
    • Note : Gujarat will be second state after Goa to use VVPAT system for the Assembly elections in entire state.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's fiscal deficit for April-August reached 96.1% of the budgeted target for the current fiscal year that ends in March 2018. 
    • The fiscal deficit stood at ₹5.25 trillion ($80.42 billion) and net tax receipts in the first five months were ₹3.4 trillion, government data showed. 
    • Note : The deficit was 76.4% of full-year target during the same period a year ago.
  • John Davison Rockefeller, industrialist, philanthropist, and founder of Standard Oil Company, became the world's first billionaire on this day (29th September) in the year 1916
  • With 4.79 million millionaires, the United States had the highest number of millionaires in 2016, according to consultancy firm Capgemini's World Wealth Report. 
    • The US is followed by Japan (2.89 million), Germany (1.38 million), and China (1.13 million). Further, the number of millionaires in the world rose nearly 8% in 2016 to an all-time high of around 16.5 million.

  • An expert committee, set up by the Union Home Ministry to suggest ways to tackle online hate speech, has recommended appointing cybercrime coordinators in all states and establishing cybercrime cells in each district.
    • The committee was headed by : TK Viswanathan (ex-Lok Sabha secretary general)
Deaths
  • Veteran Congress leader and close confidant of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, Makhan Lal Fotedar (85), passed away.
    • Fotedar, who hailed from Kashmir, served as Rajiv Gandhi's political secretary for three years after the death of Indira Gandhi, following which he became a Cabinet minister.

  • Bengaluru-based food delivery startup Swiggy has appointed former Britannia executive Rahul Bothra as its first ever Chief Financial Officer
Science & Technology
  • Rajasthan's Central Electronic Engineering Research Institute (CEERI) has developed a handheld meter which will detect adulterants such as urea, detergents, boric acid and caustic soda present in milk in 60 seconds. 
    • The device, which is produced at a cost of ₹5,000, can be used by both domestic users as well as enforcement agencies, as per CEERI scientists.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In a research report , the State Bank of India (SBI) has announced that banks may lose ₹3,800 crore annually due to investment in card-swipe machines, as costs outstrip revenues. 
    • After demonetisation, the number of point-of-sale (PoS) terminals increased from 13.8 lakh in March 2016 to 28.4 lakh as of July 2017. 
    • On an average, banks are installing 5,000 PoS per day.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Krasava, the official match ball for 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, was launched today. 
    • The structure of Krasava, a term used by Russian fans to describe a striking performance, incorporates the same panel shape as the balls used in the UEFA Euro 2016. 
    • Important Note : The Under-17 World Cup will be the first official FIFA tournament to be held in India.
