International Current Affairs
- Today (4th May 2017) is International Firefighters' Day.
- It was instituted after proposal emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia.
- May 4 used to be a traditional Firefighters' Day in many European countries, because it is the day of Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters.
- Prince Philip, the 95-year-old husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II shall retire from his public duties this autumn, the Buckingham Palace announced today.
- However, the 91-year-old Queen shall continue to carry out her full programme of engagements.
- India will discuss and take a decision on the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status given to Pakistan, MoS for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman announced today.
- China is going to launch its own online encyclopaedia next year rivalling Wikipedia and Britain’s Encyclopaedia Britannica.

- The Swachh Bharat survey 2017 has declared Madhya Pradesh's Indore as the cleanest city in India.
- The survey, conducted in 434 cities, declared Gonda in Uttar Pradesh as the filthiest Indian city.

- The Assam government is going to introduce a 'traditional' dress code — dhoti-kurta for men and mekhela-chador for women — for its employees on first and third Saturdays of every month, on voluntary basis.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Union Cabinet on today cleared an ordinance to empower the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to reduce bad debts of public sector banks.
- The amendment will empower RBI to issue directions to banks to recover dues from loan defaulters.
- It will also allow RBI to set up oversight panels that will shield bankers from later action by probe agencies looking into loan recasts.
- Considering the growth in passenger traffic and demands from airlines, the Centre today approved the conversion of Vijayawada airport into an international airport.
- This makes Vijayawada the 4th international airport in Andhra Pradesh, with Hyderabad, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam already having such airports.
- Madhya Pradesh today became the 6th state in the country to pass the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill 2017.
- Uttarakhand, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh had earlier passed the bill.
- The Union Cabinet has given its approval for National Steel Policy (NSP) 2017 to give impetus to the steel sector.
- This policy aims to enhance domestic steel consumption and transform Indian steel industry into a technologically advanced and globally competitive steel industry.
- Important Note : India is the 3rd largest global producer of steel.
Science & Technology
- The Indian Army today successfully test-fired an advanced version of the BrahMos land-attack cruise missile in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the 2nd consecutive day.
- Note : The BrahMos is the world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation.
Sports Current Affairs
- India's National Football Team entered the top 100 of the FIFA national team rankings for the first time in 21 years after getting placed at the 100th spot in the latest FIFA rankings released today.
- Note : India's football team last entered FIFA's top 100 in February 1996, when they were ranked at the all-time high ranking of 94.
- Indian boxers Shiva Thapa (60 kg), Sumit Sangwan (91 kg) and Amit Phangal (49 kg) assured India of a medal each after entering the semi-finals of their respective weight categories at the Asian Boxing Championship today.
- The trio also qualified for the World Championships which will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from August 25 to September 3.
