International Current Affairs
- International Workers' Day, also called Labour Day or May Day, is being observed today.
- This day is celebrated on May 1st every year to commemorate the struggles of working people throughout the world.
- May Day originated in late 19th century when labour movement to gain the 8-hour work day began.
- European Union leaders have promised to embrace the British province of Northern Ireland after Brexit if it ever unites with Ireland.
- India will give Rs. 35 crore rupees to children of freedom fighters in Bangladesh under the new ‘Muktijodha scholarship’ scheme in the next five years.
- Under the scheme, students at higher secondary level will get a one-time grant of Tk 20,000 (Rs 15,370) and students at the undergraduate level will get a grant of Tk 50,000 (Rs 38,430).
National Current Affairs
- Maharashtra today became the first state to install first-of-its-kind automated weather stations for farmers in the region.
- The state government aims to install a total of 2,065 such units at the village/mandal level across Maharashtra.
- Uttar Pradesh state government is going to waive loans of up to ₹1 lakh of 'Divyangs' (differently-abled).
- The government also plans to hold "Samadhan Diwas" every month to resolve their problems.
- Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain today flagged off Assam's first Shatabdi Express from Dibrugarh.
- Haryana police today relaunched 'Operation Durga' to ensure women's safety.
- The state government had started the operation earlier this month but it was stopped within a week.
- Women and children will be allowed to use toilet facilities at hotels and restaurants, including five-stars, in South Delhi for free from today (1st May 2017).
- The Real Estate Act which aims to protect the interests of homebuyers by ensuring transparency has come into effect.
Science & Technology
- The “South Asia satellite” for use by countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region will be launched on 5th May 2017.
- Important Points to Note :
- During the 2014 SAARC summit that held in Nepal, the plan for the satellite was announced and subsequently all SAARC countries have joined it except Pakistan.
- Hence, the beneficiaries of the satellite will be Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
- Dubai government today announced the launch of "Dubai Font", the world's first typeface developed by Microsoft for a city.
- The font will be available in 23 languages to users of Office 365.
- Dubai's Crown Prince, Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum, has urged all government institutions to adopt the font in official correspondence.
- Elon Musk-led aerospace startup SpaceX today successfully launched a spy satellite into orbit for the US military.
Sports Current Affairs
- Spain's Rafael Nadal today defeated Austria's Dominic Thiem to win his 10th Barcelona Open title.
- It was Nadal's second title of the season and 71st of his career.
- Note : Last week, Nadal had won the Monte Carlo Masters for the 10th time becoming the first men's player in the Open era to win the same title 10 times.
- Barcelona Open Doubles Title was won by Florin Mergea (Romania) and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi (Pakistan)
- Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa today defeated compatriot Dipika Pallikal in the women's singles final to become the first Indian to clinch the Asian Squash Championship title.
- Mercedes' Finnish Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas claimed his first ever Grand Prix victory after winning the Russian Grand Prix today.
- The top-seeded Indo-American pair of Leander Paes and Scott Lipsky defeated Argentine third seeds Leonardo Mayer and Maximo Gonzalez to win the Tallahassee Challenger title of the men’s double.
