National Current Affairs
  • PM Narendra Modi today announced that the 'Benami' property law, which directs up to 7 years of imprisonment for holding tax-evasive properties, will be operationalised soon.  
    • What are Benami Properties ?
      • 'Benami' properties are those in which the real owner does not buy the property in his/her own name, but takes direct or indirect gains from it.
      • Properties bought in the name of a child or spouse, or joint properties with relatives can be 'benami' if it is paid for out of unknown income sources.
  • Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia inaugurated eight public libraries constructed under the Swaraj Fund
    • These libraries have been built from the citizen local area development fund also known as Swaraj fund, and were taken up after people chose them as priority projects in mohalla sabhas conducted in various assembly constituencies.
  • Haryana government has connected 100 villages with Wi-FI services and decided to rename all common service centres and E-disha centres as "Atal Seva Kendras", which will provide e-services to people. 
    • Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar also launched 'Knowledge Warehouse', which will promote start-ups through video-conferencing.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Centre has signed a deal with the Infrastructure Architecture Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for developing ferry services at 18 locations across six cities. 
    • All these cities, including Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna and Kolkata, are located on National Waterway 1, the longest waterway in India. 
    • Note : India has approximately 14,500 km of navigable waterways.
Science & Technology
  • India test launched its indigenously developed intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear capable ballistic missile Agni-5 from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast.
    • The missile is capable of striking a target more than 5,000 kilometre with nuclear warhead carrying capacity of more than one tonne.
Banking & Economic Affairs
  • Italy's cabinet has approved a bailout for the world's oldest and the country's third-largest bank, Monte dei Paschi
    • The bank had requested a capital injection from the government after it failed to raise €5 billion (around ₹35.4 thousand crore) from private investors. 
    • The bailout is expected to hit retail investors, who collectively hold around €2 billion of the bank's bonds.
  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has disabled the option to transfer money to Paytm wallets from its internet banking services. 
    • We recommend using State Bank Buddy mobile (bank's own wallet) app for Android and iOS devices.
  • The government is going to amend the law to introduce stringent punishment for bounced cheques from 2017.
    • This would be a deterrent for defaulters in India, which is saddled with over 18 lakh lawsuits on dishonoured cheques.
    •  Under the proposed changes, the defaulter could be put in jail without bail at the court’s discretion.

  • Singer George Michael (53) passed away.
    • Michael, who sold over 100 million records, was known for the songs 'Careless Whisper', 'Last Christmas' and 'Freedom! 90'.

  • Shah Rukh Khan today conferred Honorary doctorate by Moulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad.

  • The Sports Ministry has derecognised Yoga, 15 months after declaring it a 'priority sport'. 
    • The decision was communicated to National Sports Federations and the Sports Authority of India after the government concluded it will not be possible to conduct competitions. 
    • Yoga will now come under the prerogative of the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy).
Question of the day
  • Which country has the most nuclear weapons ?
    • Russia with 7,300 warheads has the most number of nuclear weapons in the world while only 9 countries are believed to possess such weapons. The US comes at second position with around 6,970 nuclear weapons. Reportedly, US President-elect Donald Trump recently said that let there be a nuclear arms race, and the US will "outmatch" and "outlast" other countries.
