International Current Affairs
  • Today (6th November) is International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
    • This day was established on 5th November 2001 by the United Nations General Assembly, during Kofi Atta Annan's tenure as Secretary-General.
    • Aim of this day : To educate people about the damaging effects of war and armed conflict on the environment.
  • British Prime Minister Theresa May is arriving in New Delhi tonight on a three-day visit to India.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first International Agrobiodiversity Congress in the Delhi. 
    • 900 delegates from 60 countries will discuss conservation of genetic resources in this conference. 
    • The conference will be held during 6th to 9th November 2016.
    • This conferenc is being organised by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Biodiversity International, a CGIAR Research Centre headquartered in Rome, Italy.
  • The Indian Army has launched Operation School Chalo in South Kashmir, to identify teachers and provide students with free coaching and make them participate in extra-curricular activities. 
    • Soldiers will convince parents to send their wards to make-shift dwellings to study.
    • Note : The army also started 'Naujawan Club' where youth are given a chance to display their talent in sports.
  • The Haryana government has allocated a budget of ₹12 crore to the Kurukshetra Development Board for the International Gita Mahotsav, which will be held between December 1 and 11. 
  • Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal inaugurated Jang-E-Azadi Memorial at Kartarpur near Jalandhar today.
  • In an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment today distributed 6,000 hearing aids in Manipur's capital Imphal
    • The total cost of the hearing aids was estimated to be ₹6.5 crore. 
    • Note : The current world record is held by Gujarat, wherein 600 hearing aids were distributed within 8 hours.
  • Following complaints from women, an inter-ministerial panel has recommended that the Ministry of External Affairs should stop the practice of printing details of a person's parents or spouse in the passport booklet
    • It observed that the information is "irrelevant for immigration purposes" and that passports of most countries, especially those of developed nations, do not ask for such details.

Awards & Honors
  • Two Indian films have been selected to compete with 13 foreign films in the 'International Competition' section of the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). 
    •  The Directorate of Film Festivals announced that 'Ishti', a Sanskrit film focussing on stigmas of Indian society, and 'Sahaj Paather Gappo' (Colours of Innocence) were chosen for the competition.
  • Animated sitcom 'The Simpsons' is set to break the record as the longest running US show by surpassing the TV series 'Gunsmoke', which ended after 635 episodes in 1975.
    • 'The Simpsons' has announced two more seasons, which will run until 2019. 
    • The show, which premiered in 1989, is currently in its 28th season, with reportedly over 600 episodes aired.

MOUs & Agreements
  • India and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction signed a Statement of Cooperation (SoC) of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR)
    • It was signed during the second day of the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016 held in New Delhi.

Science & Technology
  • NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission has set the Guinness World Record by setting up highest altitude GPS signal, at 70,000 km. 
    • The mission used four individual satellites that fly in a close pyramid formation tracing a highly-elliptical orbit around Earth. 
    • The satellites are used to map magnetic reconnection, a process that occurs as the sun and Earth's magnetic fields interact.

New Appointments
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be the Mascot of the Tourism Ministry's Incredible India campaign.
    • This comes after Bollywood Aamir Khan's contract with the campaign was not renewed earlier this year.
  • Industrialist Ajay Piramal, who leads the Piramal group, will head the UK-India CEO Forum, replacing ousted Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry.

Business & Economic Affairs
  • India has ranked Second on the Global business optimism index during the September quarter, improving its ranking by one spot, according to accounting firm Grant Thornton's report. 
    • Note : Indonesia ranked on top of the index.
  • India is going to sign a deal to purchase 12 amphibious rescue aircraft worth around $1.5 billion (over ₹10,000 crore) from Japanese manufacturer ShinMaywa Industries
    • This would be one of Japan's first sales of military equipment since PM Shinzo Abe lifted a 50-year ban on arms exports. 
    • The deal is expected to be signed during Abe's India visit this week.
  • Construction major Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) became India’s first firm to get debt recast under RBI’s new Scheme for Sustainable Structuring of Stressed Assets (S4A). 
    • The RBI-mandated Overseeing Committee (OC) under the S4A has approved HCC’s Rs. 5,000-crore debt recast passed by an ICICI Bank-led joint lender forum in September 2016.
  • The government has mandated the use of over 20% indigenous components in mobile devices and 40% in telecom equipment made in India for firms seeking 3% interest subsidy on exports. 
    • The order also mandated that only those companies will be eligible for the subsidy who are involved in complete manufacturing of products in India over those who only assemble products.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Former world number one and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova defeated Ukraine's Elina Svitolina to clinch the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China. 
    • Note : It was Petra Kvitova's nineteenth career title.
  • Former eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao beat Jessie Vargas to reclaim the WBO welterweight title in Las Vegas today. 
    • Note : It was Pacquiao's first professional bout after coming back out of retirement.
  • Assam's Bastab Tapan Bordoloi won five golds in the recently concluded South Asian Aquatic Championship in Sri Lanka. 
    • The 15-year-old competed in six events, winning individual golds in 50-metre butterfly and 50-metre freestyle, and team medals in three relays, besides a silver in 100-metre butterfly. 
  • India won 29 medals, including 13 golds, at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Singapore. 
    • Among the gold medalists were Rio Olympian Sandeep Tomar, who won the men's 57 kg freestyle event, Satyawart Kadian in 97 kg and Amit Dhankar in 70 kg. India's female gold winners included Ritu Phogat in 48 kg and Reshma Mane in 63 kg.
  • Briton Andy Murray attains world Number 1 ranking in Tennis for the first time replacing Novak Djokovic
