International Current Affairs
  • Today (20th November) is Universal Children's Day
    • This day was established in the year 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare.
    • Note : November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
    • Theme of the year 2016 : Stop Violence Against Children!
  • Today (3rd Sunday of November) is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
    • The United Nations General Assembly on 26 October 2005 decided to observe every third Sunday of November as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims  through UN Resolution 60/5.
    • Theme of the year 2016 : Vital post-crash actions: Medical Care, Investigation, Justice!
  • The UK Parliament has passed an extreme surveillance law labelled the 'Investigatory Powers Act'.
    • This law legalises several spying and hacking tools used by security agencies.
    • Important Points to Note
      • The bill did not face much opposition in the Parliament or outside it. 
      • US whistleblower Edward Snowden referred to this as the most extreme surveillance law in the history of western democracy.
  • The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is going to offer Iran flexibility on production volumes, as the group is nearing towards finalising its first deal since 2008 to limit oil output.
    • Iran has been a stumbling block for such a deal as it seeks exemptions to regain market share after the easing of sanctions in January.

National Current Affairs
  • The 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), considered to be Asia's oldest film festival, began in Goa today.
    • The Republic of Korea is the focus country of IFFI 2016.
    • Around 300 films from 90 countries, including National Award-winning epic drama film 'Baahubali' and Salman Khan's 'Sultan' will be screened at the eight-day long festival on till November 28.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced plans to provide a house for every Indian to mark 75 years of independence in 2022
    • Addressing the Parivartan rally in Agra, PM Modi claimed that municipalities have become cash-rich after demonetisation.

Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed opening “Islamic window” in conventional banks for “gradual” introduction of Sharia-compliant banking in India
    • “Initially, a few simple products... similar to conventional banking products may be considered for introduction through Islamic window," RBI said. 
    • Note : Islamic banking is based on principles of not charging interest, which is prohibited under Islam.
  • Telangana government is issuing coupons of ₹5, ₹10 and ₹20 to customers in return for notes like ₹500 or ₹1000 for cashless transactions at farmers' market. 
    • While customers can make purchases with the coupons, farmers can exchange these coupons for cash at the end of the day. 
    • The amount of remaining coupons with the customers is credited to their accounts.
  • The Income Tax department is planning to implement the first phase of ‘Project Insight’ from May 2017 to monitor high value transactions, with a view to curbing the circulation of black money. 
    • This project has been initiated for data mining, collection, collation and processing of such information for effective risk management with a view to widening and deepening tax base.

Awards & Honors
  • Noted flautist Pandit Hari Prasad Chourasia was conferred 2016 Sumitra Charat Ram Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Indian classical music. 
    • The prestigious award bestowed upon him by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at a function held in New Delhi.

Sports Current Affairs
  • PV Sindhu won the China Open today, to register her first tournament win post the Rio Olympics. 
    • World number 11 Sindhu defeated ninth-ranked China's Sun Yu. 
    • This is the third straight year that an Indian woman has made the China Open final, with Saina Nehwal winning the title in 2014 and finishing as runner-up in 2015.
