Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A pragmatic arrangement"

  • Pragmatic - solving problems in a sensible way that suits the present conditions, rather than obeying fixed theories, ideas, or rules

  • Threatened - to be likely to cause harm or damage to something or someone
  • Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
  • Impasse - a situation in which progress is not possible because none of the people involved are willing to change their opinion or decision
  • Averted - to prevent something bad or harmful from happening
  • Allocating - to officially give something to someone (especially a job / position)
  • Portfolio - all the responsibilities of a government minister
  • Ailing - ill and weak
  • Colleague - someone who works in the same organization or department as you
  • Preside - to be in charge of something
  • Resume - to start something again after stopping temporarily
  • Undoubtedly - used for saying that something is certainly true or is accepted by everyone
  • Interregnum - a period of time when there is temporarily no one in charge of a country or large organization
  • Hospitalisation - the act of taking someone to hospital and keeping them there for treatment
  • Broached - to begin a discussion of something difficult
  • Interim - temporary
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Uneasy - slightly nervous, worried, or upset about something
  • Calling the shots - to be in a position of control or authority
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something
  • Reluctance - unwillingness to do something
  • Acknowledge - to accept or admit
  • Unwise - stupid
  • Reassign - to give an employee a different job
  • Dissolution - the process of formally ending a parliament
  • Aspect -  a particular part, feature of something
  • Functionary - an official who works for a government or a political party
  • Unduly - to an unwarranted degree
  • Constrained - behaving in a way that is very controlled and not natural
  • Mere - used to say that something is not large or important
  • Transpired - happened
  • Adopt -  to decide to start using a particular idea, plan, or method
  • Convention - a way of behaving that is generally accepted as being normal and right
  • Officiating - to perform the official duties

  • Replete - full of something
  • Mass - a large quantity of number
  • Casualties - people who are injured or killed in an accident or military action
  • Horrific - so shocking that it upsets you
  • Mourning - the process or ceremony of expressing great sadness because someone has died
  • Injured - hurt or physically harmed
  • Civilians - people who does not belong to the armed forces or the police (normal people)
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Brutal - extremely violent
  • Campaign - a planned group of especially political, business, or military activities that are intended to achieve a particular aim
  • Evoked - to bring a particular emotion, idea, or memory into your mind
  • Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Heed - to consider someone’s advice or warning and do what they sugges
  • Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
  • Rebels - who try to remove a government or leader using force
  • Defending - to protect someone or something from attack
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Catastrophe - an event that causes a lot of damage or makes a lot of people suffer
  • Displace - to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Crumbled - to stop being effective
  • Shambles - something that is very badly organized and that does not operate effectively
  • Endure - to suffer something difficult or unpleasant in a patient way over a long period
  • Severe - very serious
  • Malnutrition - a medical condition in which you are weak or ill because you do not eat enough or do not eat enough of the right foods
  • Disaster - something very bad that happens and causes a lot of damage or kills a lot of people
  • Incessant - continuing for a long time without stopping
  • Futility - a lack of purpose, importance, or effectiveness
  • Compelled - to force someone to do something, or to get something from someone using force
  • Rivalry - a situation in which people, teams, businesses etc compete with one another
  • Proxy - someone who has the authority to do something for you
  • Geopolitical - political activity as influenced by the physical features of a country or area of the world
  • Vetting - make a careful and critical examination of (something)
  • Arms - weapons, for example guns or bombs
  • Pulled out - to stop being involved in an activity, event, or situation
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Ceasefire - an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially in order to discuss permanent peace
