Hello everyone, in our Lesson 14, we learnt about the prefix cataCata represents the meaning downToday we shall see the prefixes Circum, Circ. Happy Reading :)

Day 15 : Circum, Circ

  • circum, circ - around; about
Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  1. circumstance (noun) - Prefix = a condition of a fact. 
    1. circum - Prefix = around
    2. stance (stare) - Root = stand
  2. circumference (noun) = the line around the plane surface of a circle. 
    1. circum - Prefix = around; about 
    2. fer (ferre) - Root = carry; bear
    3. ence - Suffix = the state of
Let's have a look at some more words with circum, circ prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. circumcise = to cut around
  2. circuit = the distance around an area or space
  3. circumvent = to go or travel around something that is blocking your way. 
  4. circle = a round plane figure
  5. circular = a letter or advertisement about something which is distributed to a large number of people.
  6. circumspect = very careful about the result of something (not to take risks)
  7. circumlocution = an indirect way of saying something, especially something unpleasant:

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
  1. uni-
  2. pro-
  3. up-
  4. super-
a. forward
b. one

d. higher
