Hello everyone, in our Lesson 13, we learnt about the prefix bi, bin, bisBi, bin, bis represents the meaning two, twiceToday we shall see the prefix Cata. Happy Reading :)

Day 14 : Cata

Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  1. catalogue (noun) = lists of names setdown; registered
    • cata - Prefix = down
    • logue (legein) - Root = choose
  2. catalyst (noun) = a person or thing that causes a change. 
    • cata - Prefix = down
    • lyst (luein) - Root = make loose; agent
Let's have a look at some more words with cata prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. catarrh = a condition in which a lot of mucus is produced in the nose and throat, especially when a person has an infection, or the mucus produced
  2. catacomb = underground burial place
  3. cataract = a clouding of the lens of the eye
  4. catastrophic = in the nature of a great disaster 
  5. catapult = a device that can throw objects at a high speed:
  6. catatonia = abnormality of movement and behaviour arising from a disturbed mental state
  7. catabolism = the breakdown of complex molecules in living organisms to form simpler ones, together with the release of energy
  8. catalepsy = a medical condition in which a person's body becomes stiff and stops moving, as if dead
