Hello everyone, in our Lesson 7, we learnt about the prefix anteAnte represents the meanings before; preceding. Today we shall see the prefixes anti, ant. Happy Reading :)

Day 8 : Anti, Ant

  • anti, ant - against, opposed to
Let's try to understand this with some examples....

    1. antisocial (adjective) = harmful to society
      1. anti - Prefix = against
      2. soci (socius) - Root = ally; friend
      3. al - Suffix = related to
    2. antibody (noun) = a substance that the body produces in the blood to fight disease.
      1. anti - Prefix = against
      2. body - Root = body
    3. antagonist (noun) = a person who is strongly opposed to something or someone
      1. ant - Prefix = opposed to
      2. agonist - Root = one that is engaged in a struggle
    Let's have a look at some more words with anti, ant prefixes, for better understanding.
    1. antivirus = designed to find and destroy computer viruses 
    2. antipathy = a strong feeling of dislike 
    3. antifreeze = a substance which slows up the freezing process
    4. antibiotic = a medicine that can destroy harmful bacteria in the body or limit their growth
    5. antiseptic = a chemical used for preventing infection in an injury, especially by killing bacteria
    6. antipodes = the direct opposite of something

    Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
    1. hyper-
    2. in, il, im, ir-
    3. mal-
    4. intra-
    a. bad
    b. within
    c. in, into
    d. excessive
